| Here's a copy of the email I have received from Air Malta when I enquired about baggage allowances. At least some airlines understand Date: 26/04/2004 12:46 From: Telesales <Telesales@airmalta.co.uk> Subject: RE: Air Malta Baggage Allowance Dear John, The baggage allowance on all our flights is 20k per person. If you are a certified diver we allow an extra 15k for your gear upon presentation of a dive certificate at check-in. Please call our office on 0845 607 3710 and advise us in advance and we can enter a note in your reservation to alert check-in staff. Kind Regards, Christine. They are also cheaper than BA. See the American Airlines thread for the comments from booking I made yesterday. regards daveA -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

| So non divers are paying for divers excess luggage !! This is fair ? What about my hot air balloon, should I be charged extra to take it (300 kilos). It costs a fortunate to ship it !. Its a saftey issue, I can't fly with a rental one ! Its all about marketing... Tony ps I'm a diver who flies. In the same way we pay for Golf Clubs etc... As I've also said Air Malta are cheaper than BA for Manchester to Luqa than BA are for Gatwick to Luqa This tends to indicate the Airline profit margin is lower rather than one set of passengers subsidising the others. See the American airlines thread for the relative costings. As an additional note if I'd flown BA from Manchester I'd have been looking at £150 extra for the internal UK flight on top and have to have an overnight stay at Gatwick on the way back. Lesson already been learned, now I take a dive bag and lock the fin pockets with cable ties, and the main compartments with brass locks. Doesn't stop bagage handlers opening them, but they need to get a pair of snips and look inconspicuous doing it. Incidentally Air Malta don't provide in flight entertainment (except the comical cabin crew), don't know wether this is a blessing in disguise, but theres only so many times that you can read the complimentary DIVE magazine in 4 hours. I tie the zips with string. It's easily removed and replaced but it ensures the zips can't creep open under load. Let's face it, if someone is determined to steal your kit then no amount of padlocks or cable ties etc. will stop them. Cliff. |

You need a compass (drawing variety) or similar. You shove the point through the zip and the zip will part. Work that round and hey presto. The worst of it is, when someone has fastened two zip toggles together, you can pull the zip around and close it back up leaving no trace and padlock intact. Best thing to do is to wrap it in that clingfilm stuff, but it's prone to be opened by security. Keith |
