| Looking to going to Gozo next Easter with my family. Wife x 1, daughters x 2, sons in law x 2, grandsons x 4 (all under 4. Grandsons that is!) I will be the only diver all the rest are looking for a friendly hotel where they can chill out. Anyone know of such a hotel which is reasonably cheap with dive shop nearby or attached???? Any info on the transfer from airport to Gozo as well??? Eddie --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). | Have a look at the Aquatours website - www.aquatours.com - we went to Gozo last year with them and a great time was had by all. Aquatours sorted accomodation, diving and airport transfers to Gozo. Transfer from the airport in Malta across to Gozo and back again were in a helicopter - my kids loved it! Any info on the transfer from airport to Gozo as well??? Been to Gozo about 5 or 6 times - great place. I'm going again in September. If I were you, I'd get a holiday apartment in Marsalforn (the 'resort' - although it's a bit odd to call it that, as nowhere is particularly resort-like). When I dive in Gozo I use the Calypso Dive Centre in Marsalforn, and always found them good (start quite early, but it avoids silly surface intervals, ppl are friendly, hire equipment is ok). Say 'hi' to George for me. http://www.calypsodivers.com Marsalforn also has the advantage of being on the north coast, where most of the best diving is. Whatever you decide to do, anybody you book anything with (hotel, apartment, dive shop etc) will be able to sort you out a taxi service to/from Malta airport and it's not expensive (never done the helicopter myself - seems quite expensive for such a short trip). | With Aquatours the helicopter is included in the price - there's no suppliment to pay. In fact, as far as I am aware, thats the only method Aquatours use to transfer from Malta to Gozo -- Donna 'Always be the best you can be' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Posted via DeeperBlue.net - Your Online Resource for the UnderWater World. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Donna's Profile: http://forums.deeperblue.net/member....fo&userid=2191 View this thread on DeeperBlue.net: http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthr...threadid=51821 |

Ok! Tks for that. Getting in touch with Aquatours for a deal. With four grandchildren 1-4 years old reckon self catering will be the best. Hopeful there are reasonable restaurants/take aways in the town for evening meals. Was last in Malta in 1974 serving in the grey funnel line (RN). Eddie --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. | If you are looking for self catering I can recommend www.divebluewaters.com .. They are small and very friendly and the village where they are located is lovely. We have just returned from diving with them and cannot recommend them too highly. | Eddie, in Marsalforn there are some nice restaurants that are child friendly, with good food. Hope Aquatours come up trumps, ask for Lynda and tell her Donna said hi.... As others have said, jeep is essential, (infact most car-hire places wont hire divers regular cars). Also, there are plenty of private villas with pools (ideal for rinsing out your kit... but dont tell the land-lords) at reasonable prices. We used Moby-Dives out there for re-fills/weights etc, and they were a pretty professional bunch. (except dive cards took an age to arrive back in the UK...) Found that you also needed to pay a local doctor to issue a dive medical certificate, since they didn't accept my Padi self cert, or the in-laws BSAC self cert. Think it was 5 maltese pounds for the medical. Excellent diving though, some good wrecks etc. dont miss Mgarr ix-Xini, San Blas and Dwejra. Which are wonderful dives and generally less visited by the dive centre busloads, remaining quiet even in high season. By the same token, avoid inland sea and blue hole (except early mornings) in high season as the vast numbers of other divers there totally spoils what would be a magnificent dive. Pay a trip over to comino too, lovely snorkling, a couple of good (not so deep) caves, ideal if you want to do some shallower stuff prior to flying home. Enjoy. Don't recommend that you rely on Helicopter. There is a strict Person&Luggage weight restriction. If the copter is full, any excess baggage is left behind @ Malta and isn't brought over until the next available space, or pay a taxi to ferry it over, which seems a bit pointless to me. Yes you do need a jeep. If you can, get hold of a pajero or similar, expensive but the cheap sukis are v. cheap v.old and very very nasty - I certainly wouldn't put my family in one. Dont go for petrol on a sunday, 'cause you will need to use an automated machine - they may speak english but they sure as hell can't write instructions in plain english. If you can get a buddy you must do Ta' Cenc, the dive centres won't go there because they upset the hotel owners. What you have to do is drive through a 5* hotel (ask permission) down a road and onto what they class as a leisure area - its a cliff with sun loungers on it. Walk down 60 steps kitted up - but what you get is what i logged as the best dive in the med. If you do do it, at the end of the dive, head up the estuary til the depth is 4 or 5 metres, look under every rock and every hole and count the octupii, I lost count after 30 minutes of finding them. Oh yeah, bung the waiter at the top of the cliff £20, and he'll bring you a nice long cool lager down to the waterside. For another £20 he'll carry your kit back up, and for another £20 he'll carry you back up. Alex |
