| Just a snippet of info for anybody that is interested. Since Malta joined the EU in May, there is no longer a requirement for a dive permit or medical to dive in Malta. All you have to do now is show your qualifications and fill in a self cert form. That's saved me a bob or two. I didn't think that was to do with the EU (I certainly can't think of an EU regulation that prevents them from using their old system!) but I've been told this too. Oh and because of other bits changed at the same time, you can now apparently get Nitrox on Gozo, which is nice. Alun Harford |

Maybe the dive industry has used it as a vehicle to get rid of the "old" regulations. I dunno. All I know is that it has saved me £35 on a medical. It might be the case that they have to recognise other EU's countries fitness to dive schemes. So if you pass the UK requirements, they have to recognise it. This is certainly the case with similar activities. It's a few years ago that it made the papers, but the French require a licence for jet skiers. However, they were able to rent out jet skis to any British holiday maker in France because they satisfied the UK's requirements for driving a jet ski, because there aren't any. On the other hand, perhaps with so many UK divers going to Malta, it was costing them money. Jeez... The times I've had it done it's cost a maximum of Lm5 and the C-card Lm2 (I did get mine as well.) By your reconing as an inverse, A Brit 16 year old is not allowed in a German pub and all Brit adults have to be out by 11 coz it is Brit law? Paul |
