| Anybody know about Allegro at Cozumel? Especially comments on niceness of beach, crowds, food, snorkeling on-site and bar. (We like all-inclusives.) Thanks. -HW "Skip" Weldon Columbia, SC |

| We went to Allegro several times, but probably 10 years ago, so I don't know the current status of most of the things you asked about. But I presume the snorkeling conditions haven't changed. Snorkeling off the beach is pretty good-- not a lot of great coral, but some isolated heads, and lots of little life-- some big stuff even. Had 2 of my neatest experiences snorkeling there -- watched a bluefin tuna chase down and eat a small mojarra, and had to fend off a small remora who was trying to hitch a ride. I wouldn't have minded the remora, except that I wasn't wearing a t-shirt or skin, and he thought my nipples were food! | Cozumel isn't a great place for the all inclusive. Very typically poor quality 'hotel' food at most of the all inclusive. There are many great places to eat on the island. The cab ride into town from Allegro costs a small fortune (both ways).....you can rent a car for less money, if you make the trip into town once a day you've paid for the car. ($35-45 per day) Forest Aten "HW "Skip" Weldon" <skip5700removethis@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:u2kfpvc3pe2lq0i93oitafinj4peoisn7a@4ax.com... > Anybody know about Allegro at Cozumel? | I was there several years ago, Skip, and didn't care for the place. I think that you will find too many young children there for your liking. I am sure that you, like me, love children but not surrounding you while you are trying to have a quiet drink on the beach or at the pool. It is hard to escape them at the Allegro. The food is abundant but, generally, cafeteria quality. The place is noisy at night because of the staff "shows." For snorkeling off the hotel, El Presidente is probably the best choice. It is also closer to town, has better food and attracts an older, more affluent clientele (Since you are a finance wiz and on the board of the USC endowment, I think that you will find the guests there closer to you in age and station in life). I agree with Forest that you really want to eat in town and not at the hotel. We like the El P because the breakfast buffet and lunch selections are good and reasonably priced (by El P standards). We always go into town for dinner. (We like > all-inclusives.) I've been at that resort 3 times over the past 2 years, and enjoy it. It's nothing super fancy, but being a scuba diver, I love the convenience of having a dive shop (Dive Palancar) right there at the resort. The food is average, certainly not bad, but nothing special either. My favorite meal of the day at the Allegro is the breakfast, when you can have a nice egg omelet custom made as you like it while you watch. There are 4 bars at the resort, but I'd never seen all of them staffed at the same time (could be because of off-season?). The only one that really matters, though, is the one by the swimming pool, which also has a swim-up section, so you can sit there and sip on your dirty monkey or mexican mudslide with your butt in the water. The bar stays open 'till 2 a.m. As far as crowds go, I've always been there when the kiddies are in school, i.e. spring or fall, and so it was never a problem. I imagine that perhaps in the summer it may be different. As I said at the top of the message, I love the fact that they have a diveshop with a dock and boats right there at the resort, so it makes it very easy to do your diving in the morning, and then still have the rest of the day to hang out on the beach or by the pool. It's also good for those with a non-diving significant other. Dive Palancar is a pretty good operation, and I always enjoy diving with them. BTW, the Palancar Horseshoe is a spectacular dive, and it's only about 5 minute boat ride from the dock at the Allegro. cheers, Bo |
