The airport-based rentals offer the best selections, as resort/hotel rentals are pretty beaten up by the cruise pukes. Be certain to buy insurance and verify any pre-existing damage before driving your choice off the lot. As a safeguard against secret follow-on charges, use cash in lieu of a credit card. -- jer email reply - I am not a 'ten' ICQ = 35253273 "All that we do is touched with ocean, yet we remain on the shore of what we know." -- Richard Wilbur |

| Caution at the gas stations in Coz,...they frequently try and overcharge...watch the pump and pay cash. And I repeat, be certain any pre-existing damage is so noted on the rental form - and keep a copy. Oh and by the way everyone... As of two weeks ago - Santiago's is back!! Same place, same menu, with a few new choices. For dessert, try the coconut sorbet w/coffee liqueur - you will not be disappointed. -- jer email reply - I am not a 'ten' ICQ = 35253273 "All that we do is touched with ocean, yet we remain on the shore of what we know." -- Richard Wilbur |

It ended up being a whole lot more hassle than taking a taxi, FWIW. Buck |

Had it closed down again? When I was on Coz in May, it had just reopened after a several month hiatus. Gordon in Austin |

| I always rent a "beater" from JE Rentacar across from Plaza las Glorias. It's sometimes an adventure as you never know how well the car is going to run or what is going to break! They are pretty nice and let me swap cars daily to suite my mood or something I don't like about the car. Some sort of open body on a VW bug chassis is the best. We were there in October and it was about $38 US/day including insurance with a 4 day rental. Insurance is about $5-8 US/day. A tank should last you 4-5 days or serious driving. Funny story.....I had the brakes fail once in Cozumel. The brake master cylinder completely failed heading south to Paradise. There wasn't even any brake to pump at that point. I'm screaming to my passengers, "No brakes! No brakes! Hold on", as we head into an intersection at 40 mph. I reach down to grab the parking brake and grab the first lever my hand hits. It was the heater knob next to the parking brake. It was now in my hand and I was almost in the rear of some stopped cars. My passengers are laughing hysterically at me thinking I'm pulling one of my car racing stories/jokes ( I race in the SCCA.) until I swerve into oncoming traffic, enact a perfect Mario Andretti move, and then drop the clutch in first gear. We slowed to a stop and my guests checked their shorts. Needless to say, we "idled" to the next beach, ordered a beer and had a new car to be brought to us. Cozumel-you gotta love it! I rented one of those fiberglass-over-beetle things once, and when I pulled out from JE, the passenger seat (along with my passenger) did a back roll into the back seat area. I brought it back and got the A/C'ed sedan. Gordon in Austin |

| You should have worn the non-existent seat belts! I rented one there once where you had to slide the seat back to get reverse. I think it was the red VW "Thing/Safari" that you see around town with the flames on it. A private owner now has it and has some steer longhorns on it. Speed bump? Doesn't the word "TOPAS" mean speed up?
