| Just starting to do some research about Puerto Vallarta and wondered if it's worth planning a trip there if one of our main activities will be diving? thanks |

No. The diving just ain't that great on the Pacific coast of mainland Mexico. No coral reef, few fish, murky water, and it could be warmer. PV is a nice place, and I would probably do a few 2-tank dives if I were to go back, but you can do much better if diving's what you really want. I suggest Cozumel or the Sea of Cortez if you're settled on Mexico. |

| PV only has a handful of dive sites. I believe the best time to dive PV in during the winter months (Nov - Feb). That is when the Bay of Banderous is full of Pacific Manta and whales. If you do go diving in PV I recommend that you not dive with Chico's. They are the big tourist operator in town and will put you on a large boat with tons of snorkelers. Also their equipment is the pits! You may find a half-way decent operator in Marina Vallarta just north of PV. |

| If your goal is to dive, then NO PV is not the right destination. If your goal is a fun, relaxing vacation and diving is just one minor activity you plan, then YES go to PV. Diving is not very exciting, and the boat rides to the sites are long. | I had a great time in PV, it's a fun place to visit. But I found the diving to be mediocre at best. Runoff from the rain limits the visibility. Cabo San Lucas and Cancun were both great diving trips in Mexico. | I have twice gone with Chico's to PV dive sites in November, and was rewarded with great dives. But you must go to the more distant sites, El Morro or the Marietas. The marine life and visibility were great (in November). Do not go to Los Arcos. It's close by and cheaper, but there's nothing to see, the visibility is terrible, and it's mainly for snorklers with nothing better to do. |
