Diving in Cabo San Lucas

I'm planning a trip to Cabo San Lucas for the end of March 2005 and I was
wondering if anyone here has been there and can fill me in with your
experiences. Good dive operators, and ones to stay away from.

The two resorts we're considering staying at are:
Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos
or
Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Resort & Spa

If anyone can shed some light on either of these resorts it would be greatly
appreciated.

My wife and I did our open-water certification dives (in 1999) in Cabo
with dive operator Amigos del Mar (http://www.amigosdelmar.com/).
Owner is American... so not the language issue of some local operators.
Good boats and operations. Diving is QUITE COLD... in fact, you may
find March too cold without lots of neoprine. We went back on June and
the temps hadn't turned... surface was 65... and down from there. As
we are warm-water divers, we bagged it.

Not as much reef diving as elsewhere... attraction is the big stuff...
seals and whales.

Some GREAT restaurants... especially if you want to stay away from the
tequila bars: Three favorites -- La Republica, Ediths, Trailer Park
(cash only for huge seafood meals.

Also... if you have a day... drive up the Pacific Coast to little town
of Todas Santos. An artist town... which also has original "Hotel
California." With an Eagles "buy-me" store across the street. Kind of
neat.

If La Republica is the restaurant on an off-street downtown that opens up to
a courtyard...I agree. It was superb. I had the Carne en Nogada and it was
sensational. It is definately on my hit list when we return.

Edith's is very good as well. That is a great grill house. I think we have
an Edith's souvenir apron roaming around our house :^)

I also like Poncho's downtown. I know it is touristy and I know it is the
quintessential American style Mexican restaurant but the food is very very
good.

Stayed at the Sheraton in September, used Amigos for diving. Amigos was
great, but the diving is mediocre. The Sheraton is very nice but at least
half the property is time-shared and they were slightly pushy at check-in to
bribe us to attend a presentation. Fortunately no means no in Spanish so
it's easy enough for even the most unilingual gringos to decline.
Restaurants were pricey and just OK, except for the stand-out Pacific Rim
"Pitihayas" which was competitive in quality to the best of the genre in
L.A. and very decently priced compared to the other three. Actually, make
that four. The pool bar/cafe made some huge sandwiches so that was a
bargain too. Oh, and I guess you could count the sushi bar too, though the
selections were very limited. The property was immaculate and the colonial
architecture is a welcome change from the modernity of most of the chain
hotels in Mexico.

Greg... agree... timeshare sharks are very aggressive... more so than
Cancun and Cozumel, where we've also been (and where the diving is SO
much better). Comes, I think, from Cabo still being less developed.
Having said that, we DID buy a time share there couple of years ago...
not so much 'cause we would always go back there (a bit distant from
the East Coast), but 'cause they are in such demand that we have gotten
great trades... including to Grand Caymen, Turks and Caicos and Florida
Keys... where the diving is GREAT. Our timeshare is midway between Los
Cabos and Cabo San Lucas, on the beach, which is much quieter than in
town but necessitates a car to get around.

Again... this is cold water, Pacific diving in Cabo. In March, can be
very chilly.

I just aggressive back...and it takes but one time. Before we get to our
destination I warn my wife that I will be loud and forceful to the first one
who approaches so she doesn't have to suffer the ignominity of being beside
me at that time. I used to be nice in telling them "no thanks", but that
doesn't work and after being rude my reputation flows like fine oil through
the sales offices, kiosks and desks :^)

It's a shame because I happen to like Villa Del Palmar in Cabo and Hyatt
Caribe in Cancun (only 90 some rooms and 600 feet of gourgeous white sand
beachfront, it's almost private), but both sell timeshares or Villas so I
have to have that one moment of rudeness to protect the remainder of my
visit.
