Paradise Reef was never much of a dive site and wasn't dived much even before the new cruise ship piers were built, except for some shore diving and night dives. Haven't dived it for years. None of the reefs SOUTH of the Paradise Reef will be affected by the few cruise ships anchoring or mooring there this week. The MAXIMUM number of cruise ships in Cozumel this week will be FOUR -- tomorrow, when our ship will be there. That's is no more than the MAX number of cruise ships in Cozumel NOT docked on the piers (when they were not damaged) because I've seen as many as TEN (10) cruiseships in Cozumel on some days. For the last three days of the week, I recall the Cos Festival listed only ONE Royal Caribbean ship on each of those days. The diving industry is likely to have suffered a tremendous blow, not by the physical damage of Wilma nor the cruise ship traffic, but by the ECONOMIC loss, for lack of divers, in the delicate support base for the 200 dive shops in Cozumel! Many of those are undoubtedly wiped out by the absence of income from divers! It's a sad situation in Cozumel, which in my opinion is LEAST affected by the presence or absence of cruise ships! -- Bob. |
