| [[ This message was both posted and mailed: see the "To," "Cc," and "Newsgroups" headers for details. ]] In article Bullshark, Though your first comment is quite funny, your post is a waste of bandwidth. Taking your very insightful advice, I took 1 nanosecond to conclude that the reason I posted to rec.scuba.equipment had something to do with the fact that people who are familar with scuba equipment tend to go scuba diving which usually means traveling to some location and staying in some hotel. I guess it's conceivable that some people buy regs, bcd's and other equipment and use them as expensive paperweights in their basement apartment. <1153692286.761618.267930@s13g2000cwa.googlegroups .com>, bullshark <bullshark@gmail.com> wrote: > sytech@yahoo.com wrote: > > > I want to stay in a reasonably priced (not all-inclusive) hotel that > > has a gym, pool, business center and fridge in the room. > > Thats a really big room. That presumptious of you. There are plenty of people that don't travel to some location and stay in a hotel in order to dive. If I have a question about southern California traffic headed out to the beach, should post my questions on rec.scuba.equipment as well? Obviously, if there are better-suited newsgroups, the more appropriate newsgroups is the correct newsgroup in which to post. For instance, since you were asking about a location, perhaps rec.scuba.locations is the correct group. Cross-posting among other subgroups and to the master group is utterly redundant, but you seem to be a redundant fellow so I guess that should be expected of you. If the El Cid has what you need, stay at the El Cid. Having more than one choice, if all the choices all have what you want, is redundant. (and this is cross-posted to rec.scuba.equipment because anyone who reads rec.scuba.equipment enjoys the topic of redundancy) |

I realize you asked about El Cid, but I still prefer to use the original name, La Ceiba Hotel - they're the same place - kind of... the original La Ceiba has been there for many many years, and more recently got mixed up with those time share scoundrels from Diamond Resorts International. DRI bought the original, older section (where I stayed for several years), gutted and rebuilt half as many rooms (every other interior wall was removed). The rooms are very nice now as I've done lunch with some of their clients there. I know I'll never have my old room again - it's gone - and that's a shame (sorry... fond memories of simpler times). The tower section is the La Ceiba Hotel - I've stayed there a few times too. The corner rooms there are the larger of the choices, and the pics I just found indicate the style hasn't really changed much since the Wilma rebuild efforts. However, the beach side of the complex is totally new and differently styled (except for the pier) and none of the onsite trees have many leaves (yet) - but the man-built stuff is all new (not really surprising since Wilma tore the place to pieces). Early after DRI moved in, the staff was straining to stay afloat financially due to the mix of all-inclusive and standard hotel clients - the DRI guests NEVER offered any gratuities whatsoever ("all inclusive, why should I spend more than the $2K/week I've already paid out?") I dunno, maybe things may have improved since those earlier days. The bar is standard fare, cheap highballs, and in the bar/restaurant/pool area, don't bring your own booze, you'll regret the reaction you get, but over in the hammock/sand area it's okay. <shrug> With DRI sales staff hiding in every corner, if you see one - DUCK and RUN!! If they have a gym, it's been built since Wilma - you'll have to ask. The location is about 4 miles south of town, just north of the old international cruise pier, which puts it barely inside the south hotel zone for the cheaper cab fare to town - cabs are flat rate depending on which hotel zone you start and end at (taxis are union regulated). Not many people want to walk that far to town, though I've skated the distance on many occasions, now I use a bike. With the cruise pier as a neighbor, there's always a cab waiting outside so you'll never have to wait for one. If you see adverts about Del Mar Aquatics being the hotel dive op, it's an old advert - Aqua World is the op now - I've never dived with them, but I've not hearn complaints either (and I think I would have). Aqua World is the same outfit that hosts the Atlantis Submarine tour thing too, right next door. If you do that, I don't agree with their safety bragging - they haven't lost anybody yet, but if they ever do, it's going to be a $75/soul front page disaster for everyone on board (it tours the Chankannab park area).
