Cancun to Cozumel

Direct flights are a helluva a lot easier

However there are 20-30 min flights from Cancun to Cozumel about every
two hours

The ferry option is a pain in the butt

It is at least a 45 minute drive from (been a long time since I have
done one) Cancun to Playa De Carma. Then the Ferry ride from Playa to
Cozumel is 30 - 45 minutes. That adds at least 2 hours to your trip to
Coz if you hit transportation correctly.

definitely cheaper to ferry but airfare isn't that bad I wouldn't
consider the ferry unless I wa absolutely in a position where I could
not afford the airfare

Sorta depends on how much rush you're in and what you consider
affordable. Cancun airport to Playa Del Carmen by taxi is ~$45US
(immediately available), ~$6US by bus (bus schedule applies) - taxi
drops you off at the ferry dock, bus you'll carry/drag your stuff a few
blocks to the ferry dock. Ferry runs every hour from 6am to 10pm, is
~$8US, and 45-50 minute ride to Coz ferry dock. However you get to the
Coz ferry dock, you'll have another taxi to your house/hotel if your not
staying at the town square area. There's always a taxi waiting nearby.

If you choose the ferry, and you have a short wait for the next
departure, there are nearby opportunities for an adult beverage, cigar,
snack, and an early start on trinket shopping.

I suppose it mostly depends on when your first dive begins.

You have an airconditioned bus from Cancun (the stop is in front of the
airport, on the right end) to Playa del Carmen every hour or so. Cost
should be less than 10$ (don't remember well). The ride takes less than
hour (say approx. 40min)
From Bus stop in Playa del Carmen you will have to walk some
100-200yards carrying your stuff to the ferry terminal, which is the
biggest problem I think. It would be the same if you take a taxi, so no
sence to spend money on it in my opinion (ok. may be you want to be
10min earlier).
Ferry is again each hour or even each 30min and again another less thna
10$ if my memory is correct. The ride is approx. 40min again.
From Ferry terminal in Cozumel you will have to take a taxi (should be
approx. 5$ if you are not going to the far end of the island).
