Perhaps you could include some information about the number in your party, their ages, what you're looking for (hotel or house), and if a beach location, pool, etc, are important to you. | "Ziggy" ... > We are going to Cozumel island for next week. Looking for budget > accomodation over there. "Budget" is a rather subjective measurement... I've stayed in the Day's Inn there and I found it quite comfortable and diver friendly (i..e. it was a walk-in multi-person size shower with an additional faucet that made for easy rinsing of dive gear)... I've also stayed at the Allegro -- it's definitely NOT a "budget" accomodation by any stretch of the imagination... I'm not much of one for the all inclusive places, so I actually preferred the Day's Inn... At that time, Day's Inn was around $50 per night... There were some cheaper places for maybe $25 per night from what I understand, but I'm not sure how acceptable they might have been... |

The only thing going for it is that it's on the Square -- otherwise, it's neither "cheap" (relative to Cozumel "cheap") nor desirable, IMO. I stayed there once, in a promotion, when the room was $10 a night. Never been back ever since. There are MANY better stays in Coz for $25 or less per night. (I think Hotel Meson is more than $40 a night); and there are many $10 or $5 a night hotels not far from the Square -- no extra charge for Mexican fleas. The names of some of these are in the archives of what I had posted over the years about Cozumel. Go to the advanced search option of groups.google.com. Put in "Cozumel hotel" as the keywords, and "reef fish" as the author for the search, you'll find 138 threads (that's far too many!) Now add the condition "budget economy cheap" in the condition 'must contain one of these words', and you'll reduce the hits to 23 -- and even though many of the posts are DATED (i.e., oldies, in the 1990s), most of the hotels stayed pretty much the same. Here's ONE way to find "cheap" and reasonably clean and stayable hotels in Coz: Start from the Square, and start walking South on Avenida 5th (the first street from the ocean), and you'll find many economy but reasonable hotels such as Hotel Elizabeth, Hotel Suites Colonial, Hotel Aquilar, etc., etc. (by the time you get to Calle 3 Sur (third street). The Suites Bahia hotel is by far the best buck for the bang. I stay there every time I go to Cozumel, since 1995. In the archived threads, I've considered it in the "budget" category. Wouldn't trade the Large Penthouse Suite of that hotel (which is STILL cheap <G>) for any hotel room or suite on the island for the same price. The Management has taken that room off the LIST (in the lobby and possibly elsewhere) probably because of high demand because I have written so much about staying in that room (with separate living/ dining room overlooking the dive-boat pier, fridge, cooking facilities, color TV, and ... a HUGE jaccuzzi in the bathroom <G> -- Bob. |

But how can that be? Reef is an authority on everything. |

Still, $35 just for the fleas seems rather excessive... Oh well, I guess if you just *must* have the 'atmosphere', you would be willing to pay an additional $35... I still want to drive down there one of these days... Unfortunately, I'm getting further away from it than closer to it, so something isn't working quite right... I must be slowing migrating towards Florida so that when I'm ready to retire, I'll just have to step across the border... |

I haven't stayed there for YEARS, which was why I said "I think ... is more than $40 a night" I found this post via google, of a review posted in 1995 (that is 10 years ago <G>): $> The one we usually stay in is called the Meson San Miguel, it's $> right on the north side of the plaza, it costs $35/night. No TV I looked up the hotel webpage link https://www.reservetravel.com/v4/guestinformation.aspx and it gave, for a week (8 nights) in March: $> Room 1 $> Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun Mon Total $> $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $44.00 $352.00 (per room) $> $44.00 $> Total Room Cost: $403.04 (includes tax recovery charges and fees) $> *Unless specified otherwise, rates are quoted in US Dollars. So, that's $50+ USD a night. RF> (I think Hotel Meson is more than $40 a night); is not too far off. -- Bob. |
