| I have had an annoying ankle sprain for about 2 months which is much better now but I still have soreness in the ankle especially on the "inside" below my ankle bone. I am going to Bonaire on Saturday evening and have my Mares "SuperChannel" Fins and Harvey's 6mm dive booties packed. I will be doing "jump in the Caribbean" dives from the dock at the Divi Resort as well as some boat dives of course. I also have a pair of Oceanic "Caribe-X" closed fins which are much lighter and am wondering if my ankle would fare better with these lighter fins or should I stick with the Mares fins which are bigger and heavier? I am packed to the gills and have no room for both pairs and I don't plan to do any walk-in shore diving so I don't have to have my heavy duty booties unless I am using the Mares fins. In either case I will be using a plastic brace to protect my ankle and to give some support. Which fins should I take? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chopper |

| > Which fins should I take? I'd get a pair of Mares TRE fins and take them. I don't know anything about the fins you have. The fact that one set of fins is larger and requires booties that take up additional space may provide much of your answer. Beyond that, try both in a pool somewhere and make up your own mind. We can't possibly advise you as well as you can advise yourself. You're in possession of the sore ankle. I'm a warm water diver and have both Mares Power Quatros, Mares TRE fins. The Quatros are a lot of fin to pack and a lot of fin to push, but their power is awesome. The TREs are a great all around fin both for snorkeling and diving. They're powerful enough for most of my diving and considerably easier to pack. I use them for all diving except when I'm spearfishing or planning on fighting strong currents. Lee |

Unless the closed fins are vastly more comfortable, the open fins/ booties will give you more flexibility. You say you're not doing any shore diving, but even walking down the dock is more comfortable in boots than barefoot. If you change your mind when you're there and decide you do want to do a bit of shore diving, you'll be prepared. I'm halfway to Bonaire as I write this (on a long layover in Houston). Enjoy your trip! |

I don't think you need boots at all, so if either of those are full foot fins, take those. That way you don't have to pack boots. Plus, you don't have to try to dry them out at the end of your trip. The shore dives can require that you climb up a ladder or down / up lots of step and can also require that you have decent ankle strength to get out of the surf on the beach. I'd forget doing those if you're nursing a sore ankle. So that leaves you with boat dives which are, IMHO, very nice. If I were you, given your situation, I'd take the fins that are comfortable. Bonaire isn't known for it's strong currents so there is no need to do overkill with power-fins. Have a nice trip. |

Only 4 hours (in the past now), but we have 10 to kill on the way back (9/13). How close are you to IAH? |

How close are you to IAH? While I am in favor of it being dificult to get to Bonaire, because it holds down the traffic, the layovers sure are a pain. Fours in the airport in Curacao got very drunk and expensive. |

Fours in the > airport in Curacao got very drunk and expensive. I only have to suffer the long layovers because I was holding out for a good deal flying first-class using miles at the "saver" rate. 60,000 miles each to get to/from Bonaire, 3 out of 4 legs in first class, is a decent deal, but it required me to spend the 10 hours in Houston on the return. I could have shortened the layover to as little as 2 hours on the return, but then we would have had to fly coach from Houston to home. You don't want less than 2 hours in Houston since you have to go through customs/immigration, recheck your bags, and go through security again. Unfortunately, the one thing you can't get around when flying Continental to Bonaire is the red-eye. I'm tolerating these less and less as I age, so I might look into another way next time. Delta flies at 2 in the afternoon, though I'd probably have to overnight in Atlanta on the way there. My layovers in Houston aren't so bad thanks to President's Club membership. It's comfortable and drinks, unfortunately, are free. Therefore, it minimizes the cost of the layovers, but maximizes the drunkenness. Combine free drinks over 4 hours and a 4-hour red-eye flight, and you can see why I needed a long nap yesterday. |
