You really should pay more attention to who posted what so that you would
know to whom to reply about what... You attributed the replies of quite a
few of the rec.scuba regulars to Alan... If you're going to attempt to
insult someone, you really should be more accurate in the targeting of your
insult attempts...

Oh, and BTW, 5 years as a diver isn't necessarily all that much to brag
about... You're still a newbie... Over here, quite a few of us remember when
Darwin was the only certification agency... You didn't get a certificate if
you passed, but you definitely got one from the M.E. if you failed...

"Welcome to rec.scuba... Has anyone told you to fuck off yet?"

I have to agree with you . Whoever said those nasty things deserves the
worst you can dish out. Perhaps it was that mean old Alan, I dunno, but you
shouldn't take it lying down. I suggest you express your dissatisfaction
with your reception on rec.scuba by parading in the middle of your busiest
local street, carrying a flag that says "Alan is a Dick but his Daughters
Sure are Cute" and see what kind of response that gets you. Perhaps you'll
get no response at all, but it can't be worse than the way people normally
treat your dysfunctional persona. If you do get any kind of meaningful
response, please post it here.

Oh, Alan, you were so gentle with the little putz. I guess it will be up to
some of the other rec.scuba denizens to eat this guy for breakfast. MmmMmm,
fresh meat. It's been a while.

Naw, you're confusing me with some of the other great apes here.

That I understand. But he might as well have said "fuck you" to Greg or
Grumman or whoever else was complaining (and actually they were just
playing). Or just ignore them.

Agreed to. I have sometimes used deeperblue to acces rec.scuba as
google groups previously took ages to update (though I find it easier
to follow a thread on google than on deeperblue).

Cheers,

Default Deeperblue USENET portal suspended/lost (was: Air New Zealand and Air Qantas ground Handlers at Brisbane Air Port. Did they Still my luggage?)

What it means is that the free service that Steve had been providing had
proven to be more trouble than its worth, so he said "screw it".

It mostly was probably in the area of drawing complaints that Steve had
to deal with. Its a thankless job.

Personally, I'm sorry to see such a free portal go away, as it was a
valued service, even if it occasionally was the source of YA jerk with
an axe to grind...we have plenty of those on our own anyway, so there's
really no reason to pick on Steve any more than Google, WebTV, or even
the anonymous remailers.

I do hope that Steve reconsiders his decision. For example, I've
noticed that ISP's are starting to drop free Newsgroup services in their
subscriptions...it would be a pain to have to set up my own News Server
simply to avoid having to use Google's ungainly interface.

I disagree.

Providing Usenet access might seem like a nice idea, and for literally
one or two people, it's a useful service (now duplicated by Google).
But for the majority of participants on a web based forum, it provides
a portal to a world they know nothing about and are ill prepared to
participate in. Usenet is a very different place than web based forums,
and many of the people posting to Usenet via web based forums have no
idea where they are. The latest interloper was a perfect case in point.
One of his crisicisms of me was that I didn't have a profile on Deep
Blue, telling me that he had absolutely no idea he was participating in
a Usenet newsgroup.

People who know enough about the Internet to participate in Usenet, do
so. Providing Usenet access through a web based forum simply duplicates
access already provided by Google, and opens the door for really
clueless interlopers.

FWIW, I'm finding more and more of the broadband ISP's are dropping
their previously complimentary news servers, which means seeking out
alternatives. As such, I'd disagree that its a very small population
who would find it of value.

True, and this problem is more of an education issue. The party who is
responsibile for it is whoever is providing the portal service. In the
case of deeperblue, Steve chose to pull the plug rather than to accept
responsibility for having to write a FAQ to educate clueless users.
IMO, I think that that's unfortunate, but it is in the end, his choice
to make.

FWIW, I don't know if you recall the days from when there were email
portal services into rec.scuba, but these were also slowly shut down
over time due to similar "more trouble than they're worth" problems for
the volunteers who donated the hardware and personal time to run them.

True enough. The question as I see it is that USENET has generally
succeeded in remaining relatively commercial-free and that there are
trade-offs for keeping it that way which, for better or worse, will
always have to include how to educate newcomers.

And FWIW, I really do loathe Google's current ("beta") format.
