I've been to the part of Oman that sits on the tip of the Mussandan
peninsula (separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE). Excellent diving -
very clear water, lots of colour, beautiful wildlife, including a leopard
shark and the biggest moray on earth, lots of lionfish and great barracuda.

Don't have any accomodation tips since I stayed in Dubai's airport hotel and
drove to various sites. The Oman diving I did was just over the border at
Dibba (no border crossing checks so you don't have to worry about visas).

I was there in late March, and the water was an icy 23 degrees. Sadly that
was the wrong time of year for the whale shark migration up that part of
the coast.

Dive operation was Scuba International, who were so-so. Not bad, just
unaccomodating.

With a non-diving partner I would suggest going to Dubai, from where
you can do a day trip to the Musandam Peninsula (leaves at 6am) for two
dives. The boat was full when I was there in June, and I dived Dubai
instead. So you would want to book ahead of travelling. The following
link might help you:

Enjoy!
