Default Miami and Keys

Hi

I will be on my own in FL for a few days in mid Sep and would like to
scuba at least once while I'm down there. I am OW1 qualified, but
haven't dived for quite a while. I prefer shore dives.

Any suggestions?

Please e-mail me direct at: janpaulr @ yahoo .com

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Florida is about 300 miles long and almost as wide. You're going to have to
be a bit more specific about location that this if you expect any real help.

For most of Florida, forget shore diving. While the diving can be very
good, there are only a few places where it's within comfortable swimming
distance of shore. The east coast of S. Florida, Ft. Lauderdale in
particular, is an exception. There is good shore diving here, but it's
higher than average risk. There are a lot more boats down here than there
are competent captains. Any time you're in the water, you're at risk from
carelessly operated vessels. When you dive from shore, you're at greater
risk.

Also, if you want to shore dive, bring a buddy with you. You'll find it
hard to find anybody here that wants to shore dive with those they don't
know, particularly those of questionable skills, which, based on your
relatively low level certification and admission that it's been a while
since you last dove, includes you. No insult intended.

Not likely. You asked here, we answer here.

I don't think there is much shore diving there - I know that most spots
in the Keys are from boats

You can't do much better than John Pennekamp in Key Largo.

Ask for Pete Verbeek -- great Divemaster/Instructor!!

If your in South Florida then you want Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (at the eastern
end of Commercial Blvd.)

If your in North Florida then the only shore diving youre going to find is
the springs which there are many.
If you narrow down your location in Florida I'll be able to give better
specifics.

AKA Lauderdale-by-the-Sea former site of Ocean Fest
before they ruined it by moving the fest to Ft.Lauderdale.

"They" didn't ruin it.
Lauderdale By the Sea didn't want it back.
Too many dead bodies on the beach made the town jumpy.

safe diving,

Dead bodies? That's not fair! I was merely taking an extended SIT due to
the long walk back to my car.

But you must admit that the new location doesn't seem to be working out.
I have been going to Ocean Fest since 1997 or was it 99, and this
year I found less food vendors and less products on display.
What I did find, was a tourism show for dive resorts.
With what it offered this year, I see no reason to return next year.
Maybe the new location should be Pennekamp Park or Holiday Isle Resort.
