Default Solomon Islands cultural question

I'm off for the Solomon Islands soon. I have a cultural question for folks
who have been there. The books all say that if you visit the villages, which
we will, people will give you presents and that you should be prepared to
reciprocate. But they don't give any clues about what might be appropriate.
When our dive group went to Fiji, the boat captain suggested school supplies
for the children, which were joyously received but dreadfully heavy objects
to cart around in bulk.

Does anyone who's been there have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Becky in Austin

Default Re: Solomon Islands cultural question

On a trip to India--the same problem occured to me.

I solved the problem by taking along a "gross" of writing pens (ballpoints are
cheap) -- wasn't too heavy to carry around...and I was on my way (eventually) to
the Maldives on that trip.

When my car with driver stopped out in the countryside on my way to examine the
ruins of Elloraand Ajunta.... and we needed some gas...then I saw some children
nearby and motioned them to come to the car window while I passed out the
ballpoints...suddenly so many little hands appeared that it became quite "dark"
inside the vehicle.

I should have stopped by a school to dispense with the errand.

But if you're on a dive trip --and I have had three trips to the Solomon Islands
for diving...I can't imagine how or when you will be interfacing with schools
and children.

If you're on a dive charter boat, as I was on occasion in the Solomons...I
brought along some extra Chocolate bars which I handed out to children, some of
whom came out near the boat on outriggers to beg for "whatever."

You can't go wrong in any third-world country with cigarettes. The
kids love 'em.
