Default Lanzarote Diving?

In an effort to keep 'er indoors happy, I'm being forced into a week's
holiday in Lanzarote. We'll be staying in Puerto Del Carmen - is it worth me
sneaking my dive gear into my luggage? Anyone have an experience of diving
in Lanzarote? Any good dive centres in Del Carmen? Anything worth diving?
What's the typical price of a dive (tank and weights only)? Is Nitrox
available out there?

Cheers m'dears!

Two threads down another poster has just advertised his website which
includes a reasonably detailed description of his experiances diving around
Puerto Del Carmen.

Direct link: http://www.scubadive.me.uk/lanzarot.htm

Hope it's of use!

Cheers,

Pete.

Hi . I had seven dives with www.madiving.com in June 2002 and thought they
were excellent. A very professional and well equiped German outfit who were
happy to pick you up and drop you off at the hotel. There was another shop
on the beach at the old harbour ( Calipso? ) and they appeared more
interested in taking out hoardes of try a dives. Like I said, though, MA
were very good with good instructors and I'd have been happy to use their
kit if I hadn't taken my own. As for the diving, it wasn't too bad at all.
Not teeming with life but plenty to see in 20-25m visibility; angel
sharks, grouper, barracuda, moray eels, a couple of swim throughs and a few
wrecks in the harbour ( as we dived on the wrecks, a tourist submarine
sailed passed with punters waving from the windows!!!). All of the dives
were in the 25-40m range, 18C ( my 5mm steamer did the trick )and good vis.
15l tanks were available as was nitrox but I wasn't using it and couldn't
tell you if it was expensive. I would definately recommend the dive shop and
diving in the resort.

Cheers,

Paul MacPherson.

It must be available somewhere. I'm there in March doing a trimix course.
(No I don't know any details. It's all arranged through a school in the UK).

There are at least 20 dive schools on the Island and half a dozen have
Nitrox.
As you are based at Puerto del Carmen reasonable outfits are: Safari Diving,
MA Diving, Island Watersports & Atlantic Diving.
But ........and this WILL make a big difference to your holiday. PDC is
based
on a reef/marine park, so the chances of you actually diving anywhere else
tends
to be pretty slim. After all why have all the hassle of organising somewhere
else
when you can just push them off the beach.
So you miss the stunning (and IMO best) northern sites like Mala.

I would suggest you take a look Calipso Diving www.calipso-diving.com
Although further along the coast at Costa Teguise, they dive every day at
Carmen
so that's not a problem, but they also run trips and boats all over the
Island.
So you can do Mala.

They have Nitrox available which is good, as the dives on this Island are
perfect
for it.

As usual everything can be hired, but I tend to take just my basic kit (BC,
Regs,
fins, mask and hire a wetsuit (Calipso have snazzy 7mm all-in ones).

I'll second that Terry. Costa Teguise is a much nicer resort as well.

very true, but while the diving is good, and calipso very good, you should be
aware there is a lot of wind surfers who love costa tegusie because it can be a
bit breezy.
I would go back.

Ahh, but that's one of Calipso's strong points.
There is almost zero diving at Costa Teguse (Only the Punto Jabillio lagoon
at 4m). So Calipso use 4x minibuses to transport divers (never more than
20mins
away) to the dive sites.

Unlike other schools (which are based on specific sites), this makes them
very
flexible. So if it's a bit blowly in the South (Carmen), you can go to the
North
(Mala).

A quick phone call to a beachfront and the instant weather report can save a
days
diving.

Mind you I have been going to Lanzarote for over 10 years now and only once
in all that time, have we had to call off all diving.

Hmm, I wonder if Spanish law has changed regarding O2 or if they're just
ignoring it. Only a couple of years ago, operators weren't carrying O2 on
boats because they weren't allowed to. They used to have those kit things
instead.

I dived with a Tenerife based operator last March and they had 02 on their
boat as well as available at their mixing station (for Nitrox/deco).
