Alan,
Sorry I thought I had just replied to the scuba.locations news
group, although I suppose the other rec.travels etc would mind as I'm
sure they are also quite annoyed with inappropriate messages. Now about
repeating it 4 times....Well that's news to me. Only the one appears on
my list, but if there are 3 others on everyone else's, then I apologise.
It was an accident.
About top posting, that is a touchy subject, some people say it's
the correct thing to do as it then cuts the need to wade through reams
and reams (multi answers) of previous messages that may be appropriate.
Others, seemingly like yourself, prefer the bottom post. Either way is
acceptable and the message that is being answered should always be left
intact and included in the reply.
It's just that this and a host of other newsgroups are being swamped
with irrelevant or pornographic material. And if we just sit here and
say nothing, then who's to blame. Them for sending it or us for saying
nothing about it and letting it happen.
As for Usenet etiquette, well I must admit, I know a fair bit about
it, but then no one knows everything about it and each rule has it's own
followers.
William.

Well, some rules, like top posting, are somewhat open to personal
preference (although I still think it makes sense to bottom post in
Usenet - e-mail is another issue), but repeated posting and widespread
cross-posting are pretty much no-nos in everyone's book. And yes, it's
usually proper to quote the original post, but even that can be trimmed
when appropriate, and in the case of a 1500 word rant, it's certainly
appropriate to trim 99% of the original post.

As for responding, I personally believe it's better to ignore the
trolls instead of letting they know their drivel is even worth a
cursory glance. They thrive on attention, no matter how negative or
slight. If they don't get any attention, they usually seek out more
productive playgrounds.

And just to keep this somewhat on-topic, where in Canada do you dive?

Alan

They've been crossposting for several years.
Requests to stop have done nothing in the past.
Killfile them and move on with your life because all you're doing by
responding to them is annoying other people who've killfiled the
original poster.

Thanks for the tips and advice, they shall be heeded.
On occasions I dive in Lake Eire, which being shallow is warmish (for
Canada), but has an amazing number of wrecks. Also dive Fenlon Falls, a
bit colder but the water is amazingly crystal clear. On occasions visit
friends in Rhode Island and Mass and we dive around Cape Cod etc. But I
usually dive 3 or 4 times a year in the Carib, Belize, Roatan, Panama,
Colombia. Found the Costa Rican water to be usually to murky and Cuba to
be fairly devoid of fish (all eaten by the locals I presume) and the
dive operators to be unprofessional at times. The great barrier reef in
Oz was brilliant, but a bit too far for regular trips. All in all I do
prefer the warmer climates. But, if global warming continues, hey it
might just be worth doing all my dives here. Ha ha ha.
William.
