| Embassies in Colombo under special security scrutiny Alladin Hussein in Colombo, August 11, 2004, 10.49 p.m.. Several embassies in Colombo are currently under special security scrutiny, after yesterday's incident at the United States Embassy in Colombo. Even though investigations are being carried out as to determine whether the letter received at the Embassy contained the anthrax virus, sources attributed yesterday's incident to a likely act carried out by a ‘prankster'. A special security progaramme is also likely to be launched shortly by defence authorities with a security ring expected to be placed at several embassies, mainly the US, United Kingdom, France and a few other embassies. But sources said that such security measures would be carried out on a ‘low key' level with not much fuss so to avoid any unnecessary panic. Published: Wed Aug 11 12:52:42 EDT 2004 |

| No, it's mainly KILL AMERICANS, if a large dive party travels anywhere, but especially to less prosperous countries, they think its an invasion. Based upon the US overseas record since WW2, that's a justified reaction. Me too, and extending to other diplomatic services... Many years ago I went to Turkey carrying most of my money in the form of Scottish banknotes. I tried to get these changed in Istanbul but all the banks refused saying they couldn't find Scotland in their table of exchange rates. So I went to the British Consulate and asked them for a note I could take to the bank saying that Scottish money had the same value as English. Their response was "we're not a bank, why don't you go to Greece and try there?" (I finally managed to change the money, no thanks to the consular officials, partly with friends and partly by waiting at the consulate entrance and swapping for English notes with people on their way home). So when the place got bombed by al-Qaida I had a hard time feeling it as any great loss.
