Default Sipadan Photo Gallery

G'day from Sydney, UKRS!

Photo Gallery from recent trip to Sipadan with Borneo Divers is now up
at:
http://www.huwporter.com/scuba/sipadan.html

These shot with a Sony DSC-P100, with (where used) internal flash
only. The manufacturers 40m housing proved - under extensive idiot
testing - idiot proof.

Conditions were - to say the least - atypical of Sipadan. Typhoon
Chanthu had passed through the southern Philippines, causing storms
through northern Borneo, a couple of days before our visit. Following
a storm, Sipadan apparently often experiences a plankton bloom, and
for our visit visibility ranged from a max of around 20 metres down to
a ridiculous two metres, the water often green and gritty.

But water temps were 27/28, and the fact that a novice like me can get
shots like this in conditions like that is testament to the quantity
and friendliness of the sealife. Most dives (14 over 5 days) clocked
up more-than-fingers-and-toes numbers of turtles (sleeping, eating,
swimming between our legs etc), piles of reef sharks scattered about
the bottom, huge schools of jacks, trevally, fusilers - and Sipadan
was beautiful. The debate (not so final as some reports have
presented) about the resorts being closed down continues.

Hope your Northern Europe summer is going well, getting wet for the
first time on this trip to Aus tomorrow.

Cheers,
Huw

Really nice pics, Huw - I particularly like the really atmospheric shot of
the pier legs! Very, very nice indeed.

Great photos! In 3 weeks I will be there too, and with the same underwater
camera
I was undecided to buy the external flash before leaving, but after having
seen you photos I think that it isn't necessary. Except in case I will find
a big deal in Kuala Lampur Aiport.
However any tip concerning the island and the photos will be appreciate!!
Thank you
Bye Bye
Simonetta

Get a large memory stick, set a small image resolution (the originals
of these are 1MP), and shoot -lots- of pictures, experimenting with
different settings.

An external flash would definitely help - the internal flash is OK for
subjects up to a max of one metre away in clearish water, less in
murky conditions - for subjects beyond that turn the flash off.

Be prepared to photoshop the results, particularly with flash off.
Auto levels/contrast/colour can work wonders at bringing out the
colours that your eye can see (instinctive colour correction) from the
raw results delivered by the sensor, particularly with shallow images.

Enjoy Sipadan!

Cheers,
Huw

Thanks Steve - so far so good.

How are you set for UKRS Sydney around March 2005?

Cheers,
