He always hated Nixon passionately. And as I recall, several people went to jail over it, and the rest involved had their careers ended. |

| But heard, half-heard in the stillness, Scott writes -- > Nixon and his bunch were cocksuckers. O'Neill of the SBV is one of Nixon's bunch. -- "If any question why we died Tell them, because our fathers lied." - Kipling (after his son was killed in WWI) |

More to the point, Reagan showed that we didn't need dirty tricks, or slander. Just a healthy optimism. Consider also how Republicans won the house in 1994 - a strong positive agenda. Dennis |

Yep, followed by a tranformation into a firebreathing conservative agenda. Ask Newt Gingrich how well that went over with the voters in his district. |

Ask Newt Gingrich how well that went over with the voters in > his district. Evidently pretty well, since he did win re-election by 70.70% of the vote - 164,966 to 68,366 http://www.fec.gov/pubrec/fe1998/gah.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newt_Gingrich After the 1998 election campaign, in which the Republicans expected big gains but ultimately showed the poorest results in 34 years of any party not in control of the White House, Gingrich resigned from the speakership and from his seat in November 1998. And its likely that the impeachment took a heavier toll than a repudiation of "the firebreathing conservative agenda". http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/time/.../election.html But wasn't the former simply a way of acting out the latter? |
