| "Doug Frederick" wrote > I just got into Okahumpka, how are you doing down there? Power yet? I'm OK for now. They just lifted the boil water ban for my city and announced that mail service will resume today. Things have been relatively painless for me thanks to my generator and 50 gallons of fuel I stockpiled. I managed to get another 10 gallons last night, giving me about three days supply at present consumption rates. The shopping center just east of me got power back last night. With luck, I won't be one of the last to have power, now projected out to November 22. It's a race between getting my power back up and running out of fuel. So far, we're running neck and neck. Fort Lauderdale airport opened this morning. If they have power, the boat club may also have power. If they do, I'll be at the club with my fuel containers as quickly as possible. We have a gas pump that, with a little luck, won't be subject to long lines. One of my good friends works for a local police department. He's putting in 16 hour days and has no time to shop or wait in fuel lines. If the club's pump can be used, I'll be picking up fuel for him as well. Home Depot has long lines and only lets a few people in at a time. Pep Boys is still not open and I'm not driving around a lot with all the street lights out or down. I'm looking for something that will safely pump fuel out of my boat's tanks. They're too low in the boat for me to be sure that I can siphon it. I've pumped gas with an automotive fuel pump before. It takes forever. I'm hoping to find something better. I'll call Granger later this morning to see if they have a rotary or lever fuel transfer pump that will work. If I can access that fuel, I can wait for more gas stations to open and avoid the half day long lines. Things have not been so painless for others. My next door neighbor mentioned that she has not washed her hair in three days. She lost everything in her freezer and, without lights, is going to be early. I'm providing them and as many others as I can, with ice on a daily basis. The cost of helping them is fuel. I can only make ice when the generator is running. I'm keeping up with the demand, but I may pay for it later. It's worth the risk. Emergency services for this storm are just as bad as they were for others. The water and ice spent two days sitting in trucks that weren't told where to take it. They blamed phone service and the lack of fuel for the trucks as the reason. You'd think somebody would have guessed that might happen. Water and ice distribution seem to be OK now, but lines there are very long too and that, of course, exacerbates the fuel shortage. Food distribution is a big unkown, at least to me. I've got plenty as long as I have power. Lee |
