Just a few thoughts: I did my Open Water and Advanced Open Water in Madeira last May, a couple of weeks in Tenerife in November, a Red Sea liveaboard in December, and have just returned from 2 weeks in a hotel in Sharm el Sheikh. I have been wanting to do Rescue Diver for a while, but have avoided doing it in the UK because I dont want to dive here, and I avoided doing it on my Red Sea trips because I didnt want to use good diving time in a pool and on exercises. It now looks like we will be spending a long weekend in Tenerife soon and I am thinking of doing the Rescue there as the diving isnt fabulous, (good, but not fabulous), and I'm not that bothered about Tenerife as a holiday location. So.... Perhaps you dont need to be in one the best places in the world to learn, and there are PADI dive centres almost everywhere. Get your missus to choose where she wants to go, make sure there is a good PADI centre nearby, and go for it. I can recommend Madeira Divepoint, with Ralph and Wilfrid. They are at sea level in the Carlton Madeira Hotel http://www.divernet.com/travel/0503madeira.shtml There are lifts from reception to sea level, a jetty for shore dives, and a boat for more distant dives. Madeira isnt too lively, but very sunny. -- Richard Faulkner |

| I did my PADI OW & then next year the Adv OW in Turkey at the European Diving Centre http://www.europeandiving.co.uk/ and would thoroughly recommend them for the quality of the training and the well-organised operation. The diving is OK definitely not the Red Sea but fine for first dives. I was staying in Turunc so used their Icmeler centre - I think the diving looks better from Fethiye. For non-divers I agree there's not much to do in Red Sea resorts so Turkey may be a good compromise. |
