A lot depends on what you want to do with it. Do you just want want to take snapshots? Or do you want to something you can put on your wall, show to your friends, or even possibly sell to a magazine? Check out some of my photos that I've entered in the photo contest at UnderwaterPhotography.com - #1 site for underwater photography, underwater cameras, video, and camera housings since 1996. You can find them at: Photo Contest - Bill Stewart

These photos were all taken with a Canon A630 which is nothing more than a point and shoot digital camera. It's 8.0 megapixels and I can make 8.5X11 enlargements that look fine. The camera was a little over $200. The Ikelite housing was around $350. The real money was the strobe, an Ikelite DS125 substrobe which I spent around $900 for. You don't have to spend that much though. There are lower cost housings and strobes. I personally plan on upgrading eventually so I bought a strobe that will work with the new system that I will be putting together.

If you already have a digital camera. I would check to see if there is a u/w housing for it. That will most likely be a good place to start. My Canon had a housing that I could have bought for around $150 that was good to a 120 feet.

Most anything you want you can find online. Here are a few more links for you to check:
