Hi i'm a new member but here goes I to am a older diver I started when I
was 55 and am now 67 still diving as far as air consumpion goes you
will get better as you get more diving experence also your 2nd dive
will be better on air as you will be more confortable . I've found not
being over weighted is a help as well as being one with the water . I
stoped counting dives at 200 quite a while ago .If you are a good
swimer it helps, you need to not worry about drowning or things bitting
you don't touch just look at the fish . Take as meny courses as
possible it helps . Forgive the bad typing lots of luck howie

Default Older Diver - air consumption

I've just completed my open water training and have done 18 dives. My
consumption must have improved a bit since I started but I'm not
noticing it particularly.

At 61 is it likely that my whole lung efficency has dropped off a bit
and that my consumption will not fall significantly? Certainly I
recognise that during training exercises there is added physical
demand and I'm hopeful now that that is over things will improve but I
would be interested to know if there is anyone about who started
diving as late in life as I have and get their input.

I am 55 and have been diving since 1997, my air consumption has improved
dramatically. There is hope.

Email me for more details if you like.

Good buoyancy control is essential for decent air consumption. This BSAC
diver found the PADI "Peak Performance Buoyancy" course (90 minutes) soon
doubled my dive times! General cardio fitness has to help, of course.

To the extent you age makes it harder for you to sustain high energy levels,
it will adversely affect your consumption when high energy levels are
necessary. Otherwise, you're likely to find things much the same as
everyone else. Your consumption will improve as you become more comfortable
in the water.
