It's thought to cause bend like symptoms, as seen in SCUBA divers.
It can't be DCS because whales and dolphins don't breathe compressed gas.
Should test it, the sonar, on free divers first!

You do not need to breathe compressed gas to get DCS. You just need to
have enough time at depth to absorbe the gas then surface fast enough.

It would seem that you need to gain a better understanding of DCS.

Would you care to explain where the extra gas comes from?
One lungful of gas cannot bend you even if you have lungs
like a whale. It is the constant exposure to 'new' gas
that causes the tissue tensions to rise towards saturation
levels. You have litres of gas disolved in your tissues on
the surface and very little will enter solution.

Since this is about cetaceans ( big fish that breathe air ), I found
this
<URL:http://www.seaworld.org/infobooks/KillerWhale/adapaqkw.html>
Look at section B, diving part b.
It doesn't mention speed of ascent and the articles appearing only mentioned
( the bit you snipped )

Do whales have necks?? Next time I see one I'll examine it for blotches.

Ahem. Children, please.

Firstly, what does "You have litres of gas dis(s)olved in your tissues on
the surface and very little will enter solution" mean?

Secondly, it is entirely possible for breath-hold divers to get bent.

It's all confusing!
No mention of sonar tests or if the ama divers where molested by whales that
had been drinking and smoking.
I'll let it lie now and leave it to the whale watcher people to find the
answer.
