Default Anybody know anything about Port Stephens or other NSW sites?

I've got family in Australia and my wife & I are planning a visit. We had
been thinking in terms of diving on the GBR, but it occurred to me that
there may be some diving to be had in New South Wales too. We did a
dolphin-watching boat trip in the Port Stephens area on a previous visit,
which was great, but I'm wondering how close you can get to the dolphins
whilst diving: if you haven't got a bow wave they probably think you're
really boring.

(We're more into reef and wildlife diving than wreck diving, and dives would
need to be suitable for (very) novice divers.)

TIA

There are a number of great shore diving sites at Nelsons Bay in Port
Stephens as well as some off the islands just outside the bay.

Check out the dive sites listed on DiveOz:
http://www.diveoz.com.au/directory_s...es.asp?state=1 - look at
Fly Point, Halifax and the Pipeline.

Of the three, Fly point and the Pipeline are the best for novice divers.
Halifax drops to 27m and is (in my opinion) one of the best shore dives in
NSW.

Dave Harasti (one of the DiveOz regulars) has a web site dedicated to the
area: http://members.iinet.net.au/~diving/nelsonbay/index.htm

If you have any questions, please send me an email - my wife and I dive up
there about once a month - or drop a question into the DiveOz forums and
you'll get more information than you could ever ask for

There's loads of good diving in NSW. Places I've been are Terrigal, the
Solitary Islands, Byron Bay and Jervis Bay, but there's also really good
diving at South West Rocks and Sydney itself. Fish Rock Cave is the site i
really must do next time I'm out there, which might be a bit much for
beginners but there are plenty of dives more suitable.
