| I know there are a number of IT geeks on here (that's meant to be a compliment!) I am fed up with e-mail offering Viagra, on-line dating, penis enlargement and a host of other rubbish that I really don't need or want. Can anybody recommend some kind of spam filter I can download or buy? Thanks Bob |

It's ideal for divers, saves you getting bent There are two types of anti-SPAM filter, hosted and personal. Hosted pre-filters your inbox before you even have to download it, personal requires you to download at least a few lines. For hosted try www.emailfiltering.co.uk, it's £3.75 per month per POP3 box. The advantage is that somebody else does it all for you. For a personal solution try www.mailwasher.org, that's just under $30 and there's a 30 day trial period, that's what I use personally. It needs setting up, the easiest way to get rid of around 80% of SPAM is to use the SPAM databases (blacklists) like ORDB and SpamCop, you can do that with MailWasher. For a corporate solution try www.messagelabs.com, they are the big boys and who we now use for the BSAC (thanks MattD), it's saved me getting lynched by irate volunteers with mailboxes overflowing. If you think that it's got worse recently - it has, I've never seen anything like it. The BSAC mail stats are showing a 100% increase in email volumes in the last six weeks alone, over 95% of all emails we receive are SPAM. HTH Keith L (Geek) |

| Bob, Try Popfile from http://popfile.sourceforge.net/ free software (requires that Perl be installed), pretty good (my accuracy rate for 7000 e-mails is 98.79%), cross-platform. Personally prefer Popfile to MailWasher. Try several spam filters and go with the one that works best for you. For the longer term, put pressure on your ISP to offer it as a service. |

Can anybody >recommend some kind of spam filter I can download or buy? If you are prepared to switch mail clients, the filter that is part of Mozilla seems to work pretty well. I have spamassassin on various unix systems and that seems pretty good too, once you train the filters to recognise your own personal version of spam. I've also heard good reports of spambayes, mailwasher and spampal (all of which exist in free versions). Can anybody > recommend some kind of spam filter I can download or buy? http://www.spamweed.com I got this free from this months PCPlus cover disk (free once you have paid £6 for the mag). Registration (usually $30) is free for PCP customers before the 28th October. Better still, after 5 days of usage it now correctly filters all my mail, with no errors. The free version is V1.2.1, whereas for $30 you get V1.3.9 - I've no idea what the difference is (other than the price Cheers Matt. |
