Default OT: Hard Disk Bargain.

Totally off topic but may interest the techies amongst us....

PCWorld:

Samsung 120gb 7200rpm Hard Drive £50.53
Ultra ATA 133
Low noise technology
2mb buffer cache

MODEL- SP-1203N
£50.53

Sold out online, but my local store (Yeovil) still has stock and I've just
picked up 2!

Hope this is of use to someone.

Thanks for the tip off - might have to pop into Bath PC World tomorrow to
see if they've got any!

Thats not actually a hugely special offer, not so much so that people should
rush out to buy it. You can typically get 120GB high performance drives
from £65 now anyway (try ebuyer.com, komplett.co.uk, etc), and that would
get you one of the high performance brands, rather than the comparatively
slow Samsung.

I thought that £50 being about 30% cheaper than £65 was a very good bargain.
Especially as you haven't accounted for the VAT on Ebuyer stuff.

The only decent stuff ebuyer seem to be selling is WD Caviar's, and they're
not cheap....
Komplett have always been overpriced IMO, and the cheapest decent 120
they're doing at the moment is the Barracuda, but that's still gonna be £80

You obviously don' think so, so don't buy one!

OK

240gig total, what the blazers are you going to fit onto it?

Thats about 80000 CDs in MP3 form, more Jpegs than I care to imagine. Isn't
it a bit like buying an aircraft hangar to put a mini 850 in? How many Mini
850s can you fit into an Aircraft Hangar?

You're not one of that geezer who goes diving in Dosthill, with Twin 12's +
3ltr pony strapped centrally, and a 7ltr slung from his bottom D-rings are
you?

OBTW should I feel inferior? I've only got 8gig and I'm struggling to find
something to fill the unused 6.5gig. Ah well lets save another CD in
MyMusic folder, Its what Nero was invented for.

Alex

Good question - I have very little space left out of 380GB, and frankly have
no idea whats on there. I'm a student, but I don't suppose i've done that
much work.... :o)

Depends on the size of the hangar!

Last time I was at Stoney there was someone walking back from the air fill
place with a big twinset, and what looked like two 7s or 10s handing on each
side, although he stopped every few steps because they were bashing his
leg - about 5 minutes later he was walking along again with a pony cylinder
and one of the suit inflation bottles... I did wander where he was planning
on going with all that air - maybe just an air pig?

Surely Nero was invented to get the music *out* of your MyMusic folder and
onto CD, not the other way around...

It doesn't last long when you start processing video...

I've got about half a terabyte on my network at the moment - I might see
if my local PC World has got any of those drives left (and that's
something I never thought I'd hear myself say...)

12 hours of direct-to-disk, raw DV, would just about fill it. Have a
Maxtor on my desk with exactly that.

Now the challenge is to find 12-hour lectures to record under water !

It seems your questions have been answered already.

DV & Raw 4Mp TIFF's (11.5mb each), once you get through a couple hours of
video, and a few weeks worth of Images, it starts to build up.
BTW, I bought 2 because my friend wanted one, and couldn't make it to the
local store to pick one up.
So I have 1 x 80gb + 1 new 120gb = 200Gb.!

I've got a pair of 120Gb drives, mirrored, plus two teenaged kids and a
broadband connection.

Doesn't take long...
