Default Nitrox Try-Dives

A general question to poll the views of the lurkers and _non_Nitrox
certified....

I've been asked to run a Nitrox try-dive weeked at Vobster Quay, initally I
thought why would anybody want to do that? Many of us on here have been
diving Nitrox for a fair time and we do very much take it for granted but
obviously that is not the case for everyone.

So before I dismiss it totally - Is there a requirement?

/F

I didn't think people were allowed to use Nitrox without certification - at
least not without invalidating insurance. I can imagine the filling place
getting a bit funny about filling loads of Nitrox cylinders for you and
seeing you go and give them to someone else.

Apart from that, I don't see any real point to it. Unless you're planning
on spending a long time at depth (but not too deep obviously) in Vobster,
they won't notice most of the benefits. Could go a minute over the no deco
limit of their air computer / tables, surface quickly, then ask if anyone
has a bend - if they haven't, it must be nitrox, obviously...!
Point is, most of the advantages of longer bottom times and safer limits
with less deco can be explained by theory, but as far as i'm aware actually
diving with it won't feel any different, especially for quarry diving.

Of course, I fit into the "non Nitrox certified" category, so maybe there is
a big difference I don't know about, which i'd discover if I did a
try-dive???

I would have thought that, coupled with some basic theory and a glance at
the enhanced no stop times, that some people would benefit from such a
session. I'm not so sure that anyone would benefit from a dive a Vobsters.

Cheers
Matt.

Frank's a qualified instructor...

Ahh yeah - I wasn't really thinking about that side of it. I was just
thinking that you had to do the course before you could dive with it, but I
suppose a try dive is just like instruction isn't it... duh! :o\

You can't taste the difference so what are you going to
do? MAKE them stay down until they bust the Air no-stop
times?

You might as well run a bulk PADI or TDI basic Nitrox.
At least if they like the idea they can go away and
do it.

Air is a totally unsuitable gas to dive on. It's either
got too much nitrogen and tries to bend you and narks you
out of your skull or it has too much oxygen and tries
to tox you into a watery grave.

It's probably the most stupid suggestion to date but I think
I can top it: Argon suit inflation try dive.

<soapbox>
When you start diving you bubble through a tank full in no
time and the SPG call a halt to the proceedings long before
the tables do. Once you convince the things in your brain
that 'know' you can't live underwater your consumption drops
and the tables throw you out with lots left in the tank.
That's when nitrox gets you. It's not a matter of *not
needing* nitrox it's just a matter of time.
</soapbox>

The main reason I got a Nitrox *badge* was for the reduction of fatigue
after diving, to make those long drives home to the Midlands do-able without
stopping for a sleep. Maybe experiencing that aspect would be of use?

Some people don't use Nitrox? Come off it, you'll be telling us they dive using
air next!
