| OK, so not necessarily a goldfish bowl, but I was just wandering whether anyone knows of anywhere where a club could hire a big portable tank for diving in. Basically, something around 2m deep, minimum 3x3m square or bigger, which we could hire, put somewhere, and have someone diving in it. With see through sides or windows too. Basically, its something a couple of us in our club discussed a month or two ago, not at all seriously mind, and something just reminded me of it and I thought i'd find out if it would actually be possible. The idea, since being a Uni club we have a big potential for new members, is to do something at one of our sports fayre / sports week things - usually theres nothing much we can do as a club since diving isn't really a spectator sport! We have a sports week though, so I was thinking try to have someone in there 24/7 for the week, with sponsorship, and it'd be good publicity for the club within the Uni... Again, I realise this is a silly idea, and will probably never happen, but thinking about it I would be interested to know if such tanks are available, where from, and very very roughly how much it would cost. Any ideas? David |

Unfortunately, I'd take a guess at "a lot of money" You need quite a lot of glass to support 2 metres of water Also, it would probably make diving look pretty boring. Alun Harford |

I do remember seeing something similar in use for publicity for amateur swimming, it was mounted on the back of a flatbed truck and about 1m deep. Idea MkII - dive somewhere local like the local river through town, have a display table, maybe a video link if the viz is OK? Keith L |

Kids enjoy trying the kit too. Its in argos and index, takes about 4000 gallon to fill it though. |

At the Scottish Dive show this year ScotSAC had what appeared to be a giant paddling pool - it was only about a metre wide and bulged alarmingly but managed to retain water for the duration (can you imagine if it had failed?!!). It certainly looked cheaper than those big glass ones that you see. They were running try dives - sure fire way to get some new memebers! You could get in touch with them via their website http://www.scotsac.com/ Ben -- Ben Panter, Edinburgh My name (no spaces)@bigfoot which is a com. |

The NDC have one next to their offices (its the thing that looks like a converted stone hopper). Its a big old beast and must take hours to fill but they do exist. However, finding someone who would lend you one would probably be a bit of a challenge. Perhaps you could drop them a line and see where they got it from and how much it cost? Nick |
