Thanks mate that’s a lot of reading between the lines. The person in
question (I don’t want to mention names as some of his club are on here)
is a very confident and competent diver I have dived with him on many
occasions and will do in the future.. In fact just to get his OD he had
to pay a LDS who are a PADI and BSAC centre. I don’t understand the BSAC
policies / rules call them whatever. I just wondered if there was a way
of getting him qualified as a sports diver at such a venue and there’s
some experienced (probably some of the best in the UK) divers going to
be at Ice Breakers. What happens if you are a member of BSAC but not a
member of a club, as I believe one can do? Just for the insurance /
qualification purposes. Or again am I talking crap

What would you recommend to be the way to go on this, pay the LDS to
take the qualifying dives, or dare I say it wait another six months
for some person to feel in the mood to take him on the dives within
the club..

Sean

Goes with the territory, it's a pre-requisite skill that ones hones over the
years

I don't think that anybody understands them all, least of all me, but keep
that to yourself and don't tell anybody I said that.

For the correct answer to all your questions the BSAC Forums
(http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/) and web site (www.bsac.org) is probably
your best source of information. People on here do get a bit touchy at times
if it gets a bit BSAC'y, for some strange reason especially if I'm involved.
There's one or two UKRS names on there you may recognise as well.

Awwww, that's nice, flattery will get you everywhere around here The
beauty of UKRS events such as IceBreakers is the diversity, from 1,000+ dive
technical Trimix instructors through to qualifying dives only PADI OW
divers. But it's just a group of friend meeting, treat it as that and you
wont go far wrong.

Quick answer : You can either train via a school or get friendly with a
branch, either will do. I'm a member of BSAC Direct but I do occasionally
dive with branches. There's also the Regional Coaching scheme, they may be
able to help as well. For BSAC Direct the actual qualifications are signed
up by the DO at BSAC HQ.

Quick answer : I don't know your friend but in general - I would recommend
that he finds a different club! They're all different, contact a few local
ones and pop along as a guest for an evening or two, ask them how they can
help. Any club who leaves a keen and competent OD hanging around for six
months waiting for a qualifying dive deserves to sit around themselves and
wonder why they have just lost a member...
