Default Inspiration CCR v O/C opinions

I've been doing alot of thinking lately (dangerous for me) about where I
want my diving to go & I want to end up on trimix, but what are your
opinions on getting there?

Do I carry on gaining o/c experience or jump ship to ccr now?

I'd like opinions & experiences, including taking the turtle for holidays
(problems with fills/buddies) or anytthing that may be useful

I'm currently an SAA Dive Leader &TDI Deco Nitrox with around 130ish dives,
but havn't dived in the Uk since 2001, which will be rectified next year.

My initial thinking is to go for ccr & which will be expensive in the short
term, but save alot of aggro in the long run

Over to you......

Keep gaining OC experiance get a trimix cert on OC - if only to fully
understand the bailout and reasons that you bought/will buy a CCR. When you
get a CCR remember there are three well quoted phases ;
1) novice
2) expert
3) respectful novice (when you realise you're not the expert you thought you
were)

Advice is - don't rush in.

Moving to CCR is a set back no matter how much OC experience you have.
If you dive OC trimix, you will probably be doing a fair amount of
deep dives. Moving from Trimix to complete beginner is a big step
back.

I have never taken my turtle on holiday (as in abroad) but there are
lots of people that do and don't have any more problems that OC
divers.

As far as getting fills, it's a lot easier and cheaper (especially
trimix) and a less frequent requirement. However, cheaper fills
obviously needs offsetting against initial and other costs (such as
sofnolime). OC to CCR is never a move made on financial grounds

Depends on the dives you have done but if you feel you are ready,
there is no reason why you can get through the course. When you have
done the course, you will be in the same boat as everybody that has
made the move in that you have zero CCR experience.

I would agree and that is exactly what I did. I would never go back
to OC now but that's just me.

Since when do we take good advice? I assume you
don't need us to rehearse the pro/con arguments
as you must have done your research by now, you
just want permission. Club advising against it?

If you fancy it, and you have the cash, do it.
But for crying out loud don't mortgage yourself
up to the hilt for a yellow box or you can't
afford to go diving.

The better your OC experience the more you have to
unlearn but do expect problems. There is more to
break and if something does fail you need to be able
to walk away from the dive.

Once you have it you never want to dive anything
else... that said I have a normal OC warm water
holiday in a week because I can't be bothered to
do the logistics to drag it to Egypt just to be
hauled out on a buddy's dive time as I don't solo
dive. Then there's an OC course with the club in
December so it's bubbles right the way through to
Icebreakers.

Via a good training course, plenty of listening and alot of practice

> Do I carry on gaining o/c experience or jump ship to ccr now?

Ditch the OC. The sooner you get to CCR the sooner you get your time in on
it and the sooner you get to gas diving (this is, IMHO, the longest but best
route to Trimix diving).

> I'd like opinions & experiences, including taking the turtle for holidays

Easy. Just stick it in the car or on the ferry or on the plane. I've done
all 3 with no hassel (this year Spain on the ferry & Narvik on the plane).

> (problems with fills/buddies) or anytthing that may be useful

I've had no problem with fills. Before flogging your OC kit, keep a large
cylinder for decanting O2 from.

Basic rule (TDI) - get a unit, do the basic course, get 100 hours over 100
dives and then reassess your gas diving stratergy.

Do it, but don't ask how much it's really going to cost you to get to gas
dive with it!

Cheers
Matt.

Thanks for the opinions.
I don't belong to a club at the moment, but yes, I've done the research and
IMHO it seems he sensible way to go.
Nigel H hit the particular nail I was thinking about, in the fact the I more
I learn on o/c, the more I have to unlearn to dive cc.
I was really after whether my thinking was correct (if that makes sense!)
I just wondered whether I really should do my time on o/c before heading
ccr, which appears not to be the case

I'll have a chat with the peeps on the APD stand tomorrow as well

thanks again
