| Hi Folks Does anyone own / use one of these hand-held personal location beacon (PLB) while diving? Yes, I'm looking for the model with a integrated GPS receiver. Where can I get one of these for a good price in Europe. As I'll be using it for diving, I will also need a waterproof canister to take the device below 3m. PLB: http://www.painswessex.com/?Menu=17&...ts.asp&ID=1026 Canister: http://www.painswessex.com/?Menu=17&...ts.asp&ID=1094 In the past I have carried along a 3-shot flare in my BCD for emergencies (got stranded in Lybia on the surface for 1hr.45 once and did not enjoy that expirience. My 2 Buddies & I had an SMB, 2 whistles and a dive horn, but could not get the boat to see us1km away). With the new hassles with airport security, I now longer feel comftable in smuggling my flairs when I go abrad. :-> gjw |

| I have one for sailing, in case I fall overboard. I think the "Plus" version is a bit OTT for diving, as you are not likely to be very far from shore nor from where you were lost, and you should be able to survive a fairly long time in the water if you are properly kitted out. You could save yourself a fair bit of money by getting the cheaper one that does not have inbuilt GPS in it. It will trigger the emergency services just as quickly, and the basic version gives enough accuracy for them to find you pretty quickly. |
