| Hi Folks There's some great stuff floating around on various web sites (e.g. Jason's spaces DB), I've been wondering if we should collect them under one UKRS banner? This would be in addition to the real site names such as the scuba-addict site. We've got some unused UKRS domains, one of which is UKRS.INFO which I've now placed under a very flexible DNS control system (ZoneEdit). This allows us to do things like sub-domains, we could have http://dives.ukrs.info/, http://people.ukrs.info/... anything you like really. For the real owners and webmasters of the sites how it is done would be up to you - + Simple web forwarding to your site + Masked web forwarding with you in a frame + Actual ANAME resolution to a place of your choosing (you handle the host header identification!) so you would host the http://xxx.ukrs.info/ sub-domain + You would be more than welcome to email aliases (eg. dives@ukrs.info) if you want them If people like this idea then I'll place the DNS control for a spare UKRS domain under the control of the UKRS Webmasters (hint : any more webmasters?). If the idea takes off we'll need somebody to author/host the www.ukrs.info index page as well Discuss. Keith L |

Something simple like this - http://stoneytemps.ukrs.info/ or http://www.stoneytemps.ukrs.info/ and mailto:stoneytemps@ukrs.info Suggest some other sub-domains. I don't have that much time to do any authoring right now though... Gordon |

The masked is bad because search engines like Google don't follow masked links. I'd rather stick with the single URL I've got which is already reasonably high in the search engines. Maybe a page containing links to the various active UKRS people's sites might be worth doing. It would have to be more than a straight list of links though. There are already quick enough of them. Jason -- See http://www.scuba-addict.co.uk/ to view UK dive spaces or add your own. |

I definately agree - don't make everything appear to be the same domain / page by masking the real url. Makes bookmarking pages difficult, frames are generally evil, that kind of thing. I'd say the best use for it would be using eg stoneytemp.ukrs.info would just be a very simple redirection to forward you to the actual website, whatever that may be (still can't remember...) :O\ David |

I'll agree with the problems with masked, it has it's uses where stuff is transient. Simple forwarding would be best in most cases. > > + Actual ANAME resolution... > Would be better, though personally I'm not > interested as I think it would just confuse > things. That suggestion was for anybody who was thinking "I would like to do xxx for UKRS", they would be welcome to a URL. Combined with Gordon's very generous offer of free hosting for any such UKRS sites then if anybody has the skills/inclination then we can probably sort them out a dedicated hosting account and a UKRS URL to go with it. > Maybe a page containing links to the various active > UKRS people's sites might be worth doing. You're lucky because you are on the home page and not hidden within our hundreds of links such things. Keep it for the major active sites, like the temperature finder and your who's who. My idea behind the top level www.ukrs.info site would be just a simple list. Your call Jason. If we can get a www.ukrs.info simple list page going then you'd be very welcome to a link. A simple redirection to your URL from something like http://dives.ukrs.info/ would drive people to your site and give UKRS some continuity if you (or anyone else) wanted to move the UKRS lists or take over the running of it. You can also have a masked email redirector if you want it. CAS has shown an interest for his sites, the offer is there for all on UKRS, we just need to kick-start it and get something going - if people want to that is. Keith L |
