| Flying to Sharm in a couple weeks with Monarch from Gatwick. After checking the ticket detail it states a 20Kg luggage allowance, with 5kg hand luggage. However, checking their website states that your allowed 20kg cargo luggage, 5kg hand luggage, and an additional 13kg sports good cargo allowance (this includes dive kit). Anybody know which one is right? I don't wanna drag all my kit (read: Drysuit, reels etc) to Gatwick, only to find out I can't take it. Any experiences? Regards ScubaTricky |

Then I sent them an e-mail, and I got a reply within 8 minutes of sending it! And the e-mail was free to send too... David |

OK, You might be doing some real deep exploration up in the blue hole at Dahab, I don't know, but your typical scooby-doo week in the Red sea only requires basic kit and a 3mm steamer... Gordon |

I managed to stay within the 20kg last year (just) but there were others on the boat who went well over but didn't get charged. IIRC someone was claiming to have brought through ~35kg with no excess charge. -- Ian "reorganising, a wonderful method for creating an illusion of progress" znvygb:Ian_Blakeley@ubgznvy.pbz (ROT13 all of it to mail me) The FAQ is here http://www.ukrm.net/faq/index.html 98 FZS600, 72 T120R two#34 MIB#21 TWA#6 |

January, 22ish degrees water, liveaboard, up to 4 dives a day... I'll be taking my drysuit. And why wouldn't you want a reel etc even scuby-dooing? I'll >be taking my drysuit. Fairynuff. I've been 5 times, always in November/December and was never cold in a 3mm steamer. (actually short sleeved, long legged) I did take a lighweight hood for the night dives which did make a difference. I never got a chance to do 4 dives a day, even on a livaboard. I took a drysuit once - on my very 1st trip out there. Never again. Too much hassle, too much sweat inside. Air migration and just the general faff of it all. >And why wouldn't you want a reel etc even scuby-dooing? I think you'll find it hard to get into "technically challenging" situations out there. Even when not following the guide, it's all very easy and you go up & down the boat anchor lines. Maybe a small reel and blob for emergency, but not big penetration reels unless you are specifically doing something "technically challenging" and have planned that with the boat & group in advance. Most of the wrecks are open and the water is generally crystal clear. If I wasn't taking my Inspiration, I'd just take the bare minimal kit. lightweight wetsuit, stab jacket, single valve set with a long-hose (it's almost always no-stop diving) pool fins, mask and snorkell. No pony. If you do ascend away from the boat, make sure it has an inflatable - there can be some weird currents over there which can sometimes make getting back to the boat "intersting" ... Gordon |

Everyone is ready to cut me off at the pass before answering the question I asked. Yes to 4 dives a day. Yes to wrecking. Yes to me getting cold! The kit I'm taking isn't *that* heavy, but all the little bits add up when you fill a dive bag! ScubaTricky |

One some budget airlines, they're on a bonus for charging for excess baggage. On others, they don't care. It's just hassle for them. On my last trip to Oz, my backpack was 28kgs after a couple of weeks. I had no problems on Qantas, Singapore, Air Vanuatu or even on the small twin Otter flight with Vanair.
