Go for Basic. Don't bother with the mini cylinder ones from AP / Lumb. We
sold hundreds at Dive 2003, but they tend to corrode internally after
they've been used a few times & refilled.

Try Markat, they do some 'monster' DSMB's and are cheap. You really want
something that is compact, but inflates to a good size. Therefore you'll
always tuck it in a pocket rather than leave it on the boat because it's too
cumbersome.

I've got an AP Valves mini-cylinder one you can have for £60 - used a grand
total of about twice, I think...

You want self sealing.

Many of us use the AP one with the little bottle.
It is easy to fill from your main rig and simplifies
the business of getting the thing up. Yes. Do fill
it manually when you're not pressed for time so the
day you realise you forgot to fill it it isn't a problem
but they are good kit. Count them on a UKRS trip.
They often outnumber the divers using them.

The nasty tale about the bottles corroding does
happen in a few cases but this is AP. The 'we
mend things' company so it's an inconvenience
but nothing more and frankly a lot of ottles might
be corroded but nobody ever noticed.

Disagree go for self sealing, only a couple of quid more and
guaranteed to stay on the surface

Not in my experience they don't! I've had mine for about 2 years now
and use it on every dive, no problems at all. Along with Weezles, they
are about the second most common bit of kit on your average ukrs dive
(especially with the ccr divers).

Wouldn't be without mine now!

*scratch head*

Thats certainly not my impression. I'm only onto the second cylider on
my DSMBi from AP. I've had the delayed for, err, a fair number of years
as I picked up mine soon after they came out. The new cylinder cost me
all of about £12 from AP.

The self inflating delayed, coupled with a really good (large) reel are
the best thing since sliced bread.

I've never had a problem with mine, and can (reliably) deploy the thing
from a standing start in 5-10s and be off the bottom only a few seconds
later. At trimix depths this can (literally!) be a life saver... you just
can't (reliably and repeatably) get those sorts of deployment speeds from
a normal deplayed.

In summary, I'd go with a self inflating every time. Of course, you
shouldn't stop practicing with a "normal" DSMB, 'cause one day you'll
forget to fill the bottle and have to do it by hand. :(

Al.
