| Hi, I've seen those disposible cameras everywhere, and on the back it says they go to a depth of 5 meters, has anyone tried to take them down to about normal diving depth, say about 20 meters or so, it could be that the 5 meters they say is just guaranteed it would work, but it could still possibly work at a greater depth, if they still work than I could take some down with me and make a couple of pictures, I don't need great quality photo's or something like that, just some photo's to have some memories later on, but I wanna know if they would implode at that depth or not. |

They stop working at about 8 or 10 metres because the pressure distorts them. However I've taken one to about 15m without it leaking HTH Pete diving 'at' melbourne 'dot' me 'dot' uk |

| I would suggest a Vivitar Cruisecam if you are looking for a very cheap intro to U/W photography - a cheap 35mm motorised camera (re-useable) with flash in a housing - available for £35 from Maplins - www.maplin.co.uk - part no A55AZ - do a search on it. You can also get a close-up lens for £10. It is rated to 15m, but I've used it successfully at 30m in the Red Sea - sample photos can be seen on http://homepage.ntlworld.com/cmquinn/Egypt.htm "Pete Melbourne" <psmvsl@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:tt29uv04m5n66q73oepv6l9cok6mhrcs6o@4ax.com... > On Sat, 20 Dec 2003 18:21:34 +0100, "Heavenly1" > <dontbothermailing@dontdoit.com> wrote: > > >Hi, I've seen those disposible cameras everywhere, and on the back it says they go to a depth of 5 meters, has anyone tried to take them down to about normal diving depth, say about 20 meters or so, it could be that the 5 meters they say is just guaranteed it would work, but it could still possibly work at a greater depth, if they still work than I could take some down with me and make a couple of pictures, I don't need great quality photo's or something like that, just some photo's to have some memories later on, but I wanna know if they would implode at that depth or not. > > They stop working at about 8 or 10 metres because the pressure > distorts them. Anyway, in disposables, I recommend the Fuji (because it uses a very good 800 film). Its housing is well built and I have taken it significantely deeper than 5 meters (I don't remember exactly the depth). Or, as someone has already said, the Vivitar non-disposable is a good buy (compared to the disposable, you will amortize it in 10 rolls or so). | Significantly cheaper here: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/norm... water+camera £18 plus £3 for the close up jobby. There's also lots of them on ebay for a similar price. However I've taken one to about 15m without it leaking I took one of them to 24 meters without any problem. The only thing you should be aware of is that you rapidly loose colors with a camera non equiped with flash. Actually, I took pictures at about 6 meters which appears all "grayed". -- Daniel > > HTH > > > Pete > diving 'at' melbourne 'dot' me 'dot' uk |

Firstly, some are better than others! There is one available (I think it was a fuji one) that was rated to about 10m. I used one in the Dominican Republic and got some pretty good results. Since then I have used the other two - Kodak and a different Fuji - to take photos in Spain, Tenerife and the UK with mixed results. I can confirm that neither the Kodak nor the Fuji imploded at 15m! All the photos I've taken with them were shallower than that, though, so I can't comment on how well the mechanisms will cope. As someone else said - get a Vivitar CruiseCam (Amphibia). They are cheap, and they work. Two modifications are recommended, though. Screw about 5 or 6 ounces of lead to the tripod mount and the camera remains slightly positively buoyant but sits nicely upright in the water and becomes easily controllable. Secondly, the battery compartment has a bad habit of coming open when the camera takes a knock - it didn't happen to me diving but I took it to a water park in Florida and it suffered a few "openings"! A small strip of Duck tape should do the job! Photographic results here - http://divesite.calumscott.me.uk and click "gallery"... Have fun in the realms of "No Frills" underwater photography! | I've one of the Cruise cams and had poor results - The red light seems to be a problem - has anyone else actually used one, and have any tips?? | I have used one reasonably successfully but have now moved on to digital Example shots are here - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/cmquinn/Egypt.htm Use 400 ASA film all the time, the flash if possible at anything over 10m, but you will get backscatter. You could also try improvising a red filter - red cellophane over the lens port might help "Graham Gowland" <gowlandREMOVE@bigfoot.com> wrote in message news:k_qGb.1947$Ke2.930@newsfep1-gui.server.ntli.net... > I've one of the Cruise cams and had poor results - The red light seems to be > a problem - has anyone else actually used one, and have any tips?? > > Graham > > > "Heavenly1" <dontbothermailing@dontdoit.com> wrote in message > news:3fe48515$0$46223$e4fe514c@dreader13.news.xs4a ll.nl... > > Hi, I've seen those disposible cameras everywhere, and on the back it says > they go to a depth of 5 meters, has anyone tried to take them down to about > normal diving depth, say about 20 meters or so, it could be that the 5 > meters they say is just guaranteed it would work, but it could still > possibly work at a greater depth, if they still work than I could take some > down with me and make a couple of pictures, I don't need great quality > photo's or something like that, just some photo's to have some memories > later on, but I wanna know if they would implode at that depth or not. > > > --- > Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. > Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). > Version: 6.0.555 / Virus Database: 347 - Release Date: 24/12/2003 > > |
