| > I thought feet was an imperial measurement (ENGLISH) The Imperial system weas started in the UK in the 13th Century, then America adopted our system too. The metric system was started in France at around 1800, and we started to take bits of it from the mid 1800's, and was officially introduced in the Weights and Measures Act 1963. As far as I know, the only official purposes allowed to use imperial are miles / yards road signs for distance and speed, pints for beer and milk, and acres for land registry. So yes feet is imperial, and imperial is 'English', but we didn't like it, got rid, and don't use it anymore! David |

Back in the dark ages when I learnt to dive pressure was measured in "real money" Atmospheric pressure = 14.7 lbs/inch squared. Did I really remember something from those lectures!!!! I still work out the miles per gallon for my (Japanese) motor, even if I am forced to buy it at 78.5 pence per litre. I am also a Toxophillist!!! The distances we shoot for in the U.K. are in yards, with a few competitions in metres. And... today is Yuletide, I hope you have all burnt your log, and welcome the coming of the "new sun"..... Paul........ retiring with tongue in cheek...... |

Well, "we" as in parliament... or just the young who wanted easier numbers to learn... or just me maybe...??? > Back in the dark ages when I learnt to dive pressure was Was that in Viking times, Mr Viking Diver? :O) > measured in "real money" Atmospheric pressure = 14.7 lbs/inch squared. Ick! 1 is a much better number! > I still work out the miles per gallon for my (Japanese) motor, even if I am > forced to buy it at 78.5 pence per litre. Do they not still sell petrol in gallons too? Can't say i've ever paid much attention, only ever look at litres...?! Its about 7-10p/litre for petrol and diesel in Egypt, cheaper for the crappy stuff for their old bangers - you could go there for your fills! > I am also a Toxophillist!!! Ooooh! Sounds more like some sort of doctor who does drugs and stuff! > And... today is Yuletide, I hope you have all burnt your log, and welcome > the coming of the "new sun"..... I thought yuletide was Christmas... in whcih case i'm hoping I haven't just missed it! And usually the "coming of the sun" means morning, and is therefore very unwelcome because it means people will try to get me out of my bed! :O( > Paul........ retiring with tongue in cheek...... David......... going to bed with tongue in mouth......... |
