OK. I was wrong. They do use them and they have gas
feeds to replenish the air bubble at the top.
Imagine a 6+ foot tall coffin shaped recess with the
top foot covered over so it holds air with a 12inch
round window in it. The 'in water' instructors wait
here to grab a passing student and supply the signal
to 'breath out more' (taps below the chest). If you
are in the 2nd floor tea room there is one by the door
with its gas feeds.

There are also air locks that open into the tower but
these are seperate things. I tried to photograph both
last weekend but my flash is playing up again and
shooting in ambient light didn't give me good pictures.
