| Gentlemen, all I wanted was a bit of advice about which dive computer would be the best one to replace my Oceanic XTC100. I didn't say I wanted tables, I didn't ask for sarcasm and I didn't need reprimanding. I'm an ex Navy diver with 45 years diving history, I can assess the risk factor of every dive I make and having spent 20 years doing that professionally I am probably better qualified than most of you are at doing so. Now I like a laugh as good as the next man, but I'm also an irascible old geezer and when I ask, what I think is a sensible question, I expect a sensible reply. I get a little irritated when it's dismissed as tosh or when it's suggested that I don't know what I'm doing, So to the sensitive souls who were offended by my reply, then I apologise. To the others who though they were getting a cheap laugh at my expense then it's backfired on you. To the divers who gave me advice I thank you. I always though that diving was a fellowship, just goes to show how wrong a man can be. You pretty boys and girls in your expensive pale blues, yellows and pinks don't know what diving is, for you diving is as easy as falling off a quay, but not unless the quay has been specially commissioned and costs more than the other bit of quay over there, the bit which is being used by 'other divers' that is other divers like me. G'day..If you ever see me out diving you'll know me by my kit..I'm the one in flippers and goggles. Regards Jim |

I never noticed that thread til now, but from what I can see you had a huge overreaction to a few little jokes. People do post sarcastic replies occasionally, which seem to have offended you and you attacked them. As someone else said, if you want complete, professional advice then go and pay for it, if you want the opinion of a few other divers on a newsgroup, with a few 'funny' little posts which are in the spirit of the general feel of this group then you really need to find a sense of humour. And the replies were I suspect prompted by the fact it was a question that you could have researched youself to at least get an idea before posting. Do you want a direct successor to that model, do you want the newest best comnputer available, do you want something newer but which does exactly the same things? It was a very vague question, and you'll find that they often get a few of those kinds of response. David |

So erm, professional "bait" on the end of a line, with an LST/supervisor managing your deco and gases? ;) Anyway, what does an XTC1000 do and what do you want from your next computer? /Z |

Off the cuff, go uwatec. Any recommendation should be based on the answers to the questions above. |

We have a massive range of divers on here. From warm water johnnys that are fine with an RDP and watch, through the whole range of computers and onto serious stuff, where the laminator is more of a friend then anything with a battery! Ask what computer and you will (like you did) get a large number of replies. Ask what computer for X, Y & Z and you will get specific replies. Dont blame the messenger, blame the one that wrote the message! TerryH |

I have a Mares M1 (it is nitrox compatible) which I am completely happy with but then again my diving now is very much in warm waters. Could have done with a computer for the the Kenya wreck, Mombasa 79 and the Mary Rose 79-82. Then again we weren't allowed when they did eventually arrive, were we! Civvies are different!
