Default Recommendations Mull Dive sites.

There's a few dive sites around Mull West Scotland which I've read about
but never actually dived them. Interested in opinions on the following Dives
Auliston Point
Pennygown Quarry
Big and Little Stirk Rock

Also anyone dived Loch Sunart?
Information and opinions appreciated.

Auliston Point and Pennygowan quarries are great dives - and I would
recommend them, especially if the weather is good if you are RIB diving as
you will need to echo sound to get them. Am going back up to Mull in March,
the week after you if I am correct? and given that on our Mull trips we
tend to do Calve Island and Lochaline Pier I will make a suggestion that we
do these two as alternatives. Scallies are to be had ont hem as well.

Will need to check the logbooks about the Stirks, although I seem to
remember I have stood up on one of them and had a slash on the way back to
our cottage in Loch Sunart from the Mishnish one New Year trip after a very
liquid lunch. I think it was just breaking the surface.

Will check it out and come back to you. We had a cottage in Loch Sunart but
used it as a base for the Sound and also for drives to get to Ardnamurchan
and out to Bo Selecta (aka Bo Fascadale).

Thanks Simon
Be doing them from a hardboat, used to rate Calve Island but of late been a
little underwhelmed. Last time I dived it it was covered in a really bad
silt. Doing Risga in Loch Sunartm, but wondered if anything else worth
doing.?

I have dived the shorelines and reefs of Loch Sunart up to Salen.
Most memorable for sea life are Broad rock East of Risga and the Risga
pinnacle, these are conveniently placed for the Clan Morrison hotel.
This has a pier/pontoon now, and provides excellent hot meals as well
as liquids.
Further to the West are Sligneach Beg and Mhor both provide 15m to 40m
dives with pretty sea life.
The Stirks, one shows all the time, the other covers at about Half
tide don't have so much sea life but more clams.
If you are into deeper diving, the cliff at the north end of Bloody
Bay is impressive with lots of clams.

Had a quick check of the log books

yes it was the Stirks where we had a pit stop Also dived the
Little one a few years back; did not seem that impressive. 1st wave
had done big brother and not impressed so we did Little Stirk and it
was just kelp city and sand. I think it rated as an entry out of
Gordon Pidley's (sic) Mud Slopes I have Dived Vol II

Re Auliston point - done it a few times and seem to get depths of 35 -
37ms with scallies at the bottom. Nice dive.

Re Loch Sunart looking at the logs we were staying at Glenborrodale (a
cottage not the hotel...)and dived at Sligneach Mhor (whcih Steve
references) - don't think it was a memorable dive - my notes just
ramble on about the session the night before.

Re Pennygowan - not much life on it but good cliff.

I'm with you on looking at alternatives to Calve Island.

Simon

You need to go further out really, Coll north of Ardgour has some
excellent drifts.
And St Kilda probably the clearest water I have dived in.
