| Hi All, A group of us (6) are having a family holiday in Oz in Aug / Sep & plan to do a few days diving somewhere between Brisbane & Port Douglas. I'd appreciate any recommendations of where is best to dive. I have heard that Fraser Island is better that the G B Reef. Any comments? Thanks, Nick -- Nick King. Derby. nick@king-rep.demon.co.uk Marge -- Homer your boss called and said if you don't show up on Friday, don't bother coming in on Monday. Homer -- Hoo Hoo, 4-day weekend!! |

There's no diving off Fraser Island itself. There is some diving out of Hervey Bay on Curtin artifical reef. I doubt it's as good as the GBR though. Byron Bay is nice as is North Stradbroke, though I don't think mantas are there in August. I've got some trip reports about that part of the coast on my website. The Barrier Reef is more beautiful when flying low over it than actually diving it, in my experience anyway, the Coral Sea (further out) is much better diving. Dave Morgan @ Work :^) |

| Did a few dives out of Cairns. What you won't get diving on the GB Reef out of Cairns is seclusion, but there is a lot of choice of operators, and the parts of platform reef we were taken to hadn't suffered much from diving like some reefs you see. | My wife and I had a great week staying and diving at the eco resort / island 'Lady Elliot Island'. The only way to get there is to fly from Bundaberg or Hervey Bay (in a Twin Otter or similar). Accomodation varies from permanent 'hard' tents to chalets. The island is basically a bird colony with the 'resort' in one corner and is surround by a good reef / lagoon. We dived 13 times during our stay there and saw good hard and soft corals, mantas, sharks, turtles plus a good variety of fish including large potato cod. All diving is escorted from a hardboat and maximum depth is 28-30 metres. All in all, you have to factor in the flight to the island and the cost of your stay against travelling further up the coast towards Cairns and the fact that to reach the GBR from Cairns etc is a fair boat ride. Alternatively, there are a few operators in and around Bundaberg and Hervey Bay that do day charters. see here http://www.ladyelliotisland.com.au/ |

And www.saltys.net do 3 day liveaboards out of Bundaberg. Not been with them yet. Jason -- See http://www.scuba-addict.co.uk/ to view UK dive spaces or add your own. |

| Thanks, not sure my ISP carries that newsgroup though. Do they have a web interface by any chance? On Sun, 8 Feb 2004 14:49:13 +1300, "rnf2" <rnf2@NOSPAMwaikato.ac.nz> wrote: >Aus.Sport.Scuba > > >always pays to ask a local. > |

There was a long running flame war so most people decamped to www.diveoz.com.au web forums. Jason -- See http://www.scuba-addict.co.uk/ to view UK dive spaces or add your own. |
