Default quick question for PADI instructors

Hi Folks,

Quick question for any PADI instructors out there.

I recently completed my PADI OW, Adventure diver, and then my AOW in Spain,
barring the piece of homework for the photography dive, as between
completing the dive, and doing the work, my bag was stolen with my
Adventures in Diving book inside it. Annoying.

My question is, can I beg/borrow/steal a book from someone, make a copy of
the homework, and submit it using that? or does it have to be done on the
acutal pages from the book? in which case i'll need to track one down (Ebay
here I come I guess). I'd ask the school where I did the AOW, but it's in
Spain, so it's slightly more difficult. They know about the theft, and are
happy to hold off on submitting the paperwork until I can get it to them,
which is good, but i'd rather get it sorted.

Anyway, cheers!

Gavin.

Hi Gavin

Yes, you could copy the chapter review Qs and send them in, or just
write the answers on a piece of paper. PADI does not require that you write
in the book and tear out the pages!!! So go to you LDS explain you dilemma
and ask if you can copy the review Qs.

A photocopy of the pages is NOT OK though the information on plain paper
IS OK.

If you photocopy the pages you are breaking PADI copyright, and PADI
can, and has, cautioned instructors for doing exactly that.

He's a student, not an instructor and he's sending the pages to PADI, not
providing them for a student's use. If PADI has a problem with that,
perhaps it's time to find another dive agency to represent.

It does actually say on the bottom of the knowledge reviews that they may
not be copied "for any reason" without PADI's express written consent...

....it didn't on my OW manual but did on my AOW and RD. I suspect they might
be seeing a drop off in the sales of books?

Anyway, I used to get whacked as a kid for writing on books so I just don't
do it, I photocopy all of mine. If PADI want to take it up with anyone they
can take it up with my Mum...

....I'll be betting *against* PADI!

The pages go to the instructor (or school) not to PADI, and the
instructor/school then keeps them on file.

If PADI (for what ever reason) needs to look at student records at any
time within the next 7 years then the instructor/school has a problem.

PADI is protecting its copyright.

The easiest thing to do is to wright the answers to the knowledge
reviews on plain paper. it is cheeper and does not infringe on PADI's
copyright, and causes no problems for the instructor/school.

Now the subject of whether copyright law it self is good or bad is a
very different one.

PADI has chosen not to wave its copyright for any part of the student
books (the reasons for which are easy to understand). Other agencies
have similar policys (probably for the same reasons)

FWIW I am an instructor, to remain an instructor I have to follow the
policys of my agency whether I feel that they are right or not.

I have explained the situation, I have no personal comment about policys
of any agency

I suspect the defence is to prevent the 'cut price'
schools from duping the questions and lending out
a book costing PADI the income from a crew pack
just leaving them the PIC.

I was offered this on AOW but I wanted the books
anyway. The course was cheap and the crew pack
was extra.
