| As I don't fancy eating my body-weight in carrots on a weekly basis, I figure that one of my next purchases is going to be a good torch/light/lamp/call it what you will. Unlike other recent posters I have absolutely no idea on this, none whatsoever. The diving I've done up until now has been relatively unchallenging and my little Ikelite PCLite has been just fine. However I fancy doing some night diving, want to be better prepared for the dark and sh*tty stuff that happens in these here waters and just want to be able to see the colours of stuff at depth better... I'm leaning towards umbilical (small in the hand) and HID (for brightness) at the moment but as I say I'm open to all suggestions. The only thing is I don't want to go really stupid cash-wise... Ta CAS -- Temperature @ Stoney? Find it or share it @ http://stoneytemps.calumscott.me.uk/ |

| I couldn't resist reviving this post by Ewan Rowell (hope you don't mind) originally to the inspiration NG, which diffused some lengthy and heated debate on different torches. It was one of those grey (4800 kelvin), stormy Sundays that sneaks out of the night, lurks like a school bully then fades away again when playtime is over. The boys had long since dismantled their gear and drifted off. The waves beating against the sea-wall felt like my hangover. I reached into my desk drawer and pulled out a bottle of Lagavullin, found a relatively clean glass and half- filled it. Letting the single malt roll over my tongue, I leant foward, switching on the desk light (40w, 2800k) and read through the bill from Welch-Allyn, desperately looking for loopholes. The door opened and a shaft of sunlight (950 lumens, 6200k) struck my eyes as I looked up. She was leaning against the frame and the light from behind her (possibly a wide-angle, suitable only for video) made her look like Kate Winslett in one of my nocturnal fantasies. "Are you Marlowe?" "That depends on who's asking." She wasn't tall - I'd guess a Gates Sizes FSM, but she went in and out in all the right places, so some serious modifications would be required to the standard fitting, and the curves between those places would make the trilaminate-cutter weak at the knees. She shimmered over to the chair in front of the desk and I had to put the glass down because it was building waves as big as those outside. She had the kind of walk that even Force Fins couldn't spoil. "Mind if I sit down?" "It's a free country." She narrowed her huge green eyes and gave me a look that would have frozen an Apeks first stage. "Not while the workers fail to control the means of production." She sat down and, as she crossed her legs, I thought she'd probably need something more flexible than a conventional membrane suit. This girl could cause a bigger stir in the club than when I'd turned up with an Inspiration. She reached into her pocket. "You got a light?" "Sure babe," I replied. "I've got a cute little HID that gives a brilliant blue beam but has to stay on all the time, there's one in the nose of my scooter that's bright enough to burn a way out of wrecks, I wear back-ups under each arm, and a dinky little one on my mask strap so that I can read my PO2 in the dark." She lifted a cigarette. "A wise-guy eh?" She had a face like an angel, a smile that could melt a glacier (a handy person to have around for those winter dives in the quarry). I swear she'd have even looked good behind Bob's OC/CC mouthpiece. "...err no .. I just misunderstood." I found the box with which I'd been melting the strap ends of my harness and lit her cigarette. She inhaled deeply and urgently - like a Halcyon diver. "My husband is lying to me." "Everyone lies. Look at all the wild claims these lamp manufacturers come up with..." "He keeps wandering off." "Have you tried a buddy-line?" "That was a pathetic joke." "I know, but I''m a diver, not an author of film-noir novels." Her eyes lit up like a Custom Divers after a re-build. With looks like hers, she must have queues of guys wanting to spend an exciting night. (... and I'm not talking about a dive on the Golden Gift at Oban) "You're a diver?" "The best baby. Deep wrecks, caves, closed-circuit trimix - you name it." "... but Chris says you're a big girl's blouse who wets himself when he goes below 20 metres, Mike says you've never been in a cave and Jim says you only dive in the pool. and that's when there's girls at training." "You know the guys?" "Sure. I'm in their fantasies too." "This is all going horribly wrong." "Yes Ewan you're about to wake up." "Noooooooo" |
