| The Sterling / Dollar exchange is better than its been for years, so is this the year to head for the Caribbean. Any recommendations? And advantages of doing it as an independent traveler? I recommend Playa del Carmen. I'd only go there as an independent traveller - the package tours are a total rip-off and you can get out there on a non-stop charter flight for little money. There are plenty of cheap but excellent value hotels on the beachfront and there's an abundance of things to see and do. Should you decide to go to Mexico, get one of the indispensable maps from: http://www.mapchick.com/ -- ferret Best before: see end |

| for reef diving i would suggest the caymans or grand turk. i have dived grand caymen but only read reviews of turk. its worth noting that the reef life of the caribbean is very poor compared to the much richer pacific regions. if you want fish and coral give the caribbean a miss. i liked grand cayman for its spectacular drop offs, not its reef life. i have dived some mexican reefs and did not think much of them. the best thing about mexico is the cenotes. these provide superb dives. andros is also very good for cave and cavern [blue hole] diving. i have done a lot of diving all around the world but count my cave and cavern dives in the yucatan and andros as the best i have ever made. florida reefs are poor but again there is some good cave and cavern diving.
