Default Straw pole

Walking slowly back through a packed Stoney Cove yesterday we
were struck first by the huge number of people now carrying
pony bottles - almost a majority - and the huge shortage of
DIN valved rigs. The DINs were not common on twinsets and on
singles and ponies we were just noting that we hadn't seen one
as we reached the shop ready to climb the hill when we found
one.

Probably a lot more schools and clubs at this time of year getting all their
training done in the cold while the sane people who dive for fun stay warm
at home! The clubs tend to stick with A-Clamp so people don't wreck the
thread on the DIN - I know we do (as well as just the cost of changing them
all over).

And pony's, I know that most of the regular instructors in our club now have
them, just nice to have it there as a backup should anything go wrong -
better not to be relying on students.

Thats my theory anyway...

David

Although I have DIN on my main tank, I must admit to having an A clamp
on my pony rig - that way I have a reg to take overseas as the DIN
converters are far too large.

Don't the tanks just have DIN inserts, or are they really old cylinders? I
thought just about every one made in the past 5 or more years all had din
convertable valves now? I use club cylinders which are usually a-clapm, but
taking the insert out to use with my din regs I find better than getting an
a-clamp adaptor and using that.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone come from a club / school who use DIN
regs / tanks for training new divers?

David

Yep, most do, however 'most' does not mean ALL!!!
Guarenteed that I'll get provided with a cylinder that doesn't. Then I have
to go through the fuss of swapping cylinders with students and finding one I
can use.
It's just not worth the hassle for a training situation, and tends to
confuse students more than it helps.

As I said, with my own 'leisure' diving (when I finally get a chance!) I'll
swap to DIN and take the inserts out of my 7's.

Living proof that twinsets and DIN valves are not essential to survival. <g>

yeah, newmarket BSAC (where i'm currently in the process of becoming a
member), most likely because the old kit was lost to fire damage, and
replaced my insurance.
