Default ASDA & SHARKS

Thought you might like to know the official Wal-Mart ASDA line on selling Shark meat
so here goes hope this works.

Thank you for your message.

Dear Mr Taylor

Thank you for your e-mail.

Essentially, the sustainability issue regarding shark is not
straightforward. Different species, or even different geographic populations
within the species are at different levels of sustainability around the
world. We check the sustainability of the species/area which we sell against
the IUCN Red List for Endangered Species to ensure that they are not
vulnerable.

I hope we can look forward to serving you again soon.

Kind Regards
ASDA CUSTOMER RELATIONS

If you could supply a direct link to the site that we display our displeasure then it would make it a lot easier for us to bombard them with disapproving e-mails!

I would tend to cautiously agree. There are many species of sharks, plus a
few species of fish commonly called sharks but which actually aren't
sharks... Not all of them are under threat and provided they are fished in a
semi-civilised manner I haven't got an issue with this. In particular, the
thresher shark sold by Asda is not, AFAIK, under threat.

Dominic Burch of ASDA replied to DIVER April 2004: 'But there is a demand-we
wouldn't stock Shark if it didn't sell'

Here in Manchester were Paul Chapman, of TSAC i think, raised the subject,
there is a 'demand, for illegal handguns. These will be on sale in the sports
section in Hulme from 'next week'.

seriously how do the Sri Lankans know they are Threasher Shark until they
are reeled in? What happens if they are a different species?

Are you saying that your email to Asda consisted of just that one line:
"PLEASE STOP! SELLING SHARK STEAKS NOW!" ?

R.
