Curtis and Chilly will say he should have practiced his buddy skills.

Christ, how sobering is that !

To a man used to deep, deep diving 45m must have been like a stroll in the
park...

The ocean has no respect for reputation.

My condolences to all........

I had the good fortune to do most of my dive training with John,
and then to work with him as a divemaster for a few years. I'll
always remember the fun we had and how much work he'd put in
to ensure that everyone who he taught came away as safe and
competent divers and that they really felt that they'd
acheived something. He was always willing to sit around and chat
about anything diving related and never made you feel that just
because he'd been diving for years that he knew everything.

My thoughts go out to his partner and kids - they were the one
thing more important to him than diving.

John, wherever you are, I hope the water's are warm and clear,
and the beer's cold. Cheers buddy.

I read an interesting article by Richard Pyle recently and he put
forward the opinion that someone used to extreme depths would often
treat an intermediate depth dive as nothing when it is easy to get
into problems at 30M if you are not prepared. Note I am not saying
that is what happened here, we have no where near enough information
to speculate

Jammer's knowledge can be summarized in one word.

Well, how about Nietzche then?

"This however is my teaching: he who wisheth one day to fly, must first
learn standing and walking and running and climbing and dancing:--one doth
not fly into flying!"

He may have been wrong about flying, but I agree with the idea of mastering the basics
first.
