Default New wreck in the making

Don't know if you've been keeping up on this, but the plans for an
artificial reef in Whitsand Bay (nr Plymouth) are nearly complete.
Proposal is to sink the HMS Scylla, this Saturday (27th March) subject to
weather. There should be good views from the cliffs of Whitsand,
depending on the exact location. Of course, if you have a boat, you can
get right up to the action.

Diving may commence on the Sunday, subject to the all clear from those in
charge.

More info from the National Marine Aquarium..

So who's organising the official UKRS Scylla trip?

You nearly got to be there, but there are only four spaces on the boat and
we need six.

And they would do it on fscking dive-sho weekend wouldn't they!

Probably a good move though, else every diver in the UK would be there..

Ermmmmmmm! No, I don't think so. Especially so for some of us who served in
the Grey Funnel Line. )

Never been interested in such artificial reefs. The Cedar Pride off Jordan
is a prime example. Very boring in the early 80's. Though I suppose it is a
little more interesting nowadays.

IMHO there's a lot of real wrecks I'd rather dive before I dived a fake one.

I prefer my wrecks to have a bit of history too but I'm sure I'm not the
only one who is intrigued enough to have a poke around inside an ex-Navy
frigate lying at a depth that will allow me to stay down there virtually all
day...

Each to their own as they say Don't get me wrong, the Scylla people have
my full support and I think it's an excellent idea, we could do with a few
more. But personally I would rather be dropped on the JEL next door and dive
a real wreck with character rather than some sanitised "diver friendly" fake
put there to amuse divers.

I dive BECAUSE it's unspoilt, natural and I'm seeing things as they should
be - not as somebody else imagines they should be with all those nasty
dangerous bits removed. What is the future of diving long term? With us
being banned from the Hood "because it's dangerous" are we all to be limited
to purpose made fake wrecks?

Personally I'd do both but there ya have it. And anyway, the best way to see
more artificial reefs is to show your support by diving it. If the UK diving
community turns its nose up at projects like HMS Scylla then there's fat
chance of more appearing any time soon...

Couldn't agree more mate. Like you, I'd choose a 'real' wreck that some
history over a sanitized 'diver-friendly' artificial reef any day but
equally I wouldn't turn my nose up at the Scylla either. It may lack the
'character' of something like the JEL but I'm sure the Scylla will still
prove to be a fascinating and rewarding dive. Let's face it, wreck diving is
a funny old business at the best of times anyway - if many of the wrecks we
dive were on land, we'd class them as rusting 'eye sores'. Just because
they're underwater, though, they're suddenly fascinating and I'm sure the
same is going to be true of the Scylla. Once she settles on the sea bed,
she'll take on a whole new life of her own - especially as she begins to be
colonised by sea life...

You're right about the Hood, though - the whole affair sets a dangerous
precident which I'd hate to see repeated. The problem is that I can see it
happening again as the nanny state that we live in strives to protect us
from ourselves...
